Who is Guru Arjan Dev?

Guru Arjan Dev was born in 1563 in the district of Goindwal or Tarn Taran. His maternal grandfather was Guru Amardas, the third Guru of Sikhism and his father was Guru Ramdas, the Guru of fourth Sikhism. He was the fifth Guru of the Sikhs and the first martyr of Sikhism, who was executed by order of Jehangir, the Mughal Emperor. His major achievements include compiling the first edition of the Sikh scriptures, the Adi Granth, also known as the Guru Granth Sahib. Then the Adi Granth is placed in the Harmandir Sahib.

Guru Arjan Dev is the author of many other books like Sukhmani Sahib Bani. He wrote 2000 hymns himself and it is one of the largest collections of hymns in the world. He is also known to have prepared the map of the Golden Temple himself, creating gates on all sides signifying the acceptance of all castes and religions in the Gurudwara. He was behind the construction of the Golden Temple in Amritsar. After his death, his son Guru Hargobind Singh succeeded him as the sixth Guru of the Sikhs.

How did Guru Arjan Dev die?

It was in 1696 when the Mughal Emperor Jehangir ordered the arrest of Guru Arjan Dev at Lahore Fort. It is said that he was arrested because of his growing influence over the people, and hence the influence of Sikhism on them.

Guru Arjan Dev blessed Khusrau, Jehangir’s rebellious son, which angered the Mughal king and immediately ordered his execution. His death was extremely painful and unimaginable. Guru Arjan Dev was forced to sit on a burning stone while pouring hot sand over himself. They then made him bathe in a river and tortured him for five days before he died. In short, he was burned alive for favoring the emperor’s rebellious son.
