What is the New Parliament Building?
The New Parliament Building is the new building that will house the Parliament of India. It is part of the Central Vista Redevelopment Project being implemented for the redevelopment of Central Vista, a central administrative district of the Government of India located near Raisana Hills, New Delhi.
The idea of a new parliament building arose out of fear about the stability of the existing parliament building, which is about 100 years old. The Old Parliament Building was inaugurated by Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker in January 1927.

What is Sengol?
Sengol is of historical importance in the legacy of the Indian Parliament. It was first given to India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru when he took the reins of the country after independence.
Sengol is a symbol of the transfer of power from the British government to India. The idea of Sengol was the brainchild of C.Rajagopalachari, who was inspired by the Chola dynasty.
Among the Cholas, a similar ceremony was held at the time of the transfer of power from one king to another.
The first “Sengol” was created by jeweler Vummidi Bangaru Chetty based in Chennai. It was handed over to Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on 14 August 1947.
The “Sengol” is a 5-foot long staff with the top decorated with Nandi, the god bull and vehicle of Lord Shiva. Nandi represents honesty and justice.
Sengol, blessed by high priests from the top Saivite Mutt in Tamil Nadu, carries the spirit of fair and just rule.
