Heather Armstrong was born to her parents, Linda Hamilton and Mike Hamilton. She was raised outside of Memphis, TN in a strict Mormon household. No wonder she got A’s in high school, she was president of the seminary and captain of the volleyball team. Her dream was to become a federal prosecutor, which is why she moved to Utah in 1993 on an academic scholarship to Brigham Young University.
But during college, Heather began to discover herself. Therefore, instead of studying law, she moved to Los Angeles and became a web designer. And since she always wanted to write, in February 2001 she created the Dooce blog. There, she initially wrote about “everything and everything in the broadest and most extravagant way” she wanted.
That same year, a few days after 9/11, he published a blog called “Drunken Diatribe” that included commentary on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and his parents. It was a blog that he didn’t expect her parents to read because his father never used the Internet and her mother didn’t know how to turn on a computer.
But thanks to his brother, they got a copy. “They knew how he lived, but they never confronted him,” Heather said. “It was like a slap in the face.”
After that, her father didn’t speak to her for three months and her mother was devastated.
Heather was also apparently embarrassed and deleted the post.
Fortunately, over time, Heather and her parents repaired their relationship.
But with one problem came another. Linda now suffered from suicidal depression. She even stopped taking her medication after she got pregnant. Then came the divorce from his wife, alcoholism, being fired from his job and much more.
“I had many reasons to be happy, but there was something that suffocated me inside,” he said then.
Finally, just when things were starting to look good, Linda relapsed after being sober for over 18 months in May 2023 and took her own life!
