Richard Springer and Margot Kallmann Springer, who fled Nazi Germany in 1939, are the parents of Jerry Springer. He was received on February 13, 1944 in London as Gerald Norman Springer. Jerry grew up in a small apartment in Queens, but like many immigrants, they were hard workers and determined to do better.
The Jewish Virtual Library claims that Jerry was born in a London Underground station because “his parents took refuge in the station from German bombing. His parents were Polish Jews who fled Germany during the Holocaust.”
During his interview with the Post Gazette, he said: “It is [Springer’s bio] for the whole plot. Yes, East Finchley station. I was born during the war [World War II], and women in their ninth month spent the night in subway stations because they were shelters. Hitler bombed every night. So yeah, I was born at 11:45 p.m., and every time I hear a train go by, he still jumps. [laughs]. Don’t know.”

Jerry never knew his grandparents: both of his grandparents died long before he was born. Jerry’s parents last saw his widowed mothers in 1939 when they were left behind in Berlin to flee Nazi Germany for the safety of London. Jerry moved from New York to Tulane University to attend college, where he majored in political science before earning a law degree from Northwestern University and working for the Kennedy campaign.
After the assassination of the young Kennedy, Jerry worked as a lawyer in Cincinnati before winning three seats on the city council. Despite Cincinnati’s often conservative leanings, he received the most mayoral votes in the city’s history in 1977 when he was 33 years old.
During this time, Springer also married former Procter & Gamble managing associate Micki Velten. They had a daughter together, Katie, who was born with various physical disabilities and graduated from Barat College in Illinois.
