News about Bridget Rooney
Nine members of a travel family that kept employees in squalid conditions in trailers have been jailed for crimes related to modern slavery.
A victim had to dig his own grave after more than 25 years of suffering. Martin Rooney Senior, the patriarch of the family, received a 10-year sentence, while both of his sons received sentences of more than 15 years. The traveling family was “cold in cruelty” as one author described them.
One of the largest investigations of its kind, Lincolnshire Police’s Operation Pottery, involved a case at Nottingham Crown Court.
At Drinsey Nook in Lincolnshire, Rooneys victims were beaten and deprived of access to running water or toilets. Sentencing Martin Rooney Senior, Timothy Spencer QC, said: “You raised your sons in a culture of crime.”
The judge also contrasted the victims’ poverty with the family’s affluent lifestyle. He explained to him that it was comparable to the gap between medieval royalty and peasants.
The victims will never get their years taken back, but Deputy Chris Davison, from Lincolnshire Police, said: “I hope this gives them some consolation that justice has been done. implemented and shown that we will do everything in our power to try and prevent others from suffering the way they have suffered.” Mr Davison said the force “would not rely on this outcome” as there could be more victims of modern slavery in the UK.
We are looking at five ongoing investigations and will continue to put all victims at the center of our investigations,” he continued. Seven warrants were made in Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire in September 2014, prompting police to launch operations against members of the Rooney family.
Multiple victims were discovered and the UK Trafficking Center concluded that 18 men had been brought to the site illegally.
All of the victims were aged between 18 and 63 and were often homeless, characterized as frail people picked up by the defendants from across the UK.
