Michael Richard on Queer Eye
A farmer by trade, Michael was a child when he first became interested in plants, gardening and farming. He was instilled in the sentiment of giving back to the community because he himself grew up in an environment where they constantly gave back even though they didn’t have much to go around.
For as long as he can remember, Michael has struggled with his identity and self-esteem. As a worker at Recycling Farms in downtown New Orleans, Michael constantly struggled with the feeling that he was worth people’s time and felt judged when he talked about gardening and farming.
Michael’s fiancée, Kaila Marie Vignes, nominated him for Queer Eye. The first thing Michael’s supervisor, Marianne, did in her makeover was instruct the Fab Five to show Michael that he was worthy of respect.
Personal care expert Jonathan Van Ness tried to channel 10% of Michael’s enthusiasm for gardening into personal care; he gave his hair a cool afro look. Cultural expert Karamo Brown showed Michael that he had community support available. Fashion expert Tan France helped Michael find a middle ground; she designed clothes for Michael and built his wardrobe.
Design expert Bobby Berk got Michael to apply to become the CEO of Recirculating Farms, which he had been waiting for years for. Bobby also turned Michael’s house into a welcoming place for guests. Finally, food and wine expert Antoni Porowsk assisted Michael at the annual Recycling Farms fundraiser; she helped with the catering and was also in charge of the appetizers at the event.
After the makeover, Michael seemed to be doing well in both his private and professional lives. As of May 2023, he served as a director of Recycling Farms and the process for him to become CEO is still ongoing.
In addition, Michael was also accepted into the environmental law program on a scholarship. As a result, he is currently pursuing a master’s degree in environmental law and policy at Loyola University School of Law in New Orleans.
