The late WXRT host Lin Brehmer met his wife Sara Farr in New York. Both were attending Colgate University at the time. The couple celebrated their wedding anniversary on December 7. Namely, in 1973, the married couple had their first date.
In 2013, Lin took to her Facebook to mark the anniversary of their relationship, writing, “Champagne katsu and sushi last night. Messiah at the Symphony Center this afternoon. Sara Farr spoke to the Chicago Tribune about their relationship and marriage. “Yes, we were college sweethearts,” she told the newspaper, adding that they dated for 16 years before getting married. “We didn’t want to spoil something good,” she said with a smile in her own tone. “We got married in 1997 and it was wonderful. I learned very early on that I would have to share Lin with thousands of people. I understood and I was glad I did because there really was no difference between the man on the radio and the man I knew.
During a summer semester at Colgate, Lin Brehmer worked as an assistant at WRCU to get started in radio. “You could play whatever you wanted,” she said. “It was an experience of constant discovery.” Brehmer first worked at WQBK-FM in Albany, where she acquired the nickname “Reverend Rock and Roll.”
“I worked the Sunday morning shift, so it became a running joke that ‘The Reverend’ would come,” he said. He studied literature at Colgate and used the nickname as an opportunity to quote from classics like John Milton. lost paradise as an introduction to the songs.
Lin started at WXRT in 1984 as a music director, combing through 50 to 60 albums a week looking for gems that should get radio play. He received numerous awards for his work from professional magazines, including the “Music Director of the Decade” award.

“What amazed me was how the best artists I interviewed (Pete Townsend, Robert Plant, Mick Jagger) were the easiest interviews I ever did,” he says. “They know how to charm people, and when they do an interview, they realize it’s their chance to shine.”
When Lin took over as host of the morning show WXRT in 1991, it took him about six months to find his footing. Through his on-air turns and numerous live appearances, such as his annual live seven-hour broadcast of the Chicago Cubs’ opening day at Wrigley Field, he ultimately won over audiences.
Sadly, his fans were devastated after his death at the age of 68 from prostate cancer. On July 12, 2022, Brehmer announced on radio that he had been battling prostate cancer and that he would be taking a leave of absence from WXRT on July 15 to receive chemotherapy. In November and December 2022 it was back on the air for many weeks. Brehmer passed away on January 22, 2023, and his contributor Terri Hemmert informed WXRT listeners of his death that morning.
