Jacob Hutchins on the deadliest catch

Jacob Hutchins was one of the new foreign sailors introduced by the Wizard in Deadliest Catch season 19. He dreamed of becoming the first person of color to captain a crabbing boat in the Bering Sea, and for that he worked extra hard and wasn’t afraid to speak his mind.

“I know this industry is changing and I’m not really sure what’s going to happen, but as long as that’s good, I’ll try to be a captain,” Jacob said.

However, things were not looking so good for the hopeful as he had taken two strikes from captain Keith Colburn. On the show, Jacob, who was recently demoted after ruining the crab pot, said that he likes to make bait. To which Keith replies that’s good, since he’s “going to be here for a while,” before Jacob replies, “Well, that’s okay, because he’s away from you. I like that.”

Obviously, Keith is losing his temper. “Hey! This is how you start your day again,” he snapped at the sailor. “No, you’re not on the bait anymore. You’re in your room. To go. You’re done.”

Later, Jacob confronts the captain: “I don’t know what bothers you about me, but you’ve got to get over it, man.” Keith, in turn, asks one of his sailors, Robby: “I mean, this guy here, Robby? Robby’s one of the few sailors I’ve ever had get fired from this ship and come back to work on it, okay? But what could he do for you, Robby?

“I say s-” Robby replied. I disrespected the captain, which you don’t.

Admitting that he was wrong, Jacob then says, “I’m not trying to make you mad. I’m sorry I disrespected you, Monte. And I’m sorry I put you down, Keith. I’ll listen to what you have to say. Can I help these guys please?”

The captain, who has been waiting to hear the same words, gives Jacob one more chance before advising him to go out and “kick some ass” to prove himself.

How Much Is Jacob Hutchins Net Worth?

Jacob Hutchins earned a net worth of less than $300K as of 2023. He reportedly made between $15,000 and $50,000 per season on Deadliest Catch.

This dreamer stood on his first crane on January 10, 2011. “I didn’t have a father who would allow me to have a career, who would give me a boat,” he recalled. “The people I worked with knew they were going to become fishermen from the moment they could think for themselves. They already had their lives ahead of them.”

Being a newcomer, and also a person of color, his job was not easy. “There is a lot of racism in Westport and a lot of ignorant people that I have been able to deal with. It’s just part of being African American,” he explained.

However, a few months later, he ended up on a boat with “very good people who saw how different he was” and things got easier. Fast forward to September 2017, Jacob joined F/V Saga. Six months later, he joined F/V ERLA – N and worked there for a year before finally boarding F/V Early Dawn in January 2019.

In September 2022, while working on the F/V Early Dawn, Jacob received an offer to board the F/V Wizard. So he jumped on board and became a reality star.

In addition to crabbing, Jacob also likes to sing. His love of music dates back to his childhood when he sang hymns/classical music and played the trumpet at Sylvan Way Baptist Church and High School in Bremerton. Not surprisingly, he is often found writing poetry and songs while working in the Bering Sea.

In 2020, he even formed a band called The Jacob Hutchins Band, switching from classical to jazz singing. Find them on Youtube @jacobhutchinsband
