The late BBC journalist Deborah James has two children: Hugo Bowen and Eloise.
After being diagnosed with colon cancer in 2016, the journalist only had two goals. First, to “raise awareness, break down barriers, challenge taboos and change the conversation about cancer,” and second, to prepare her family for the inevitable.
One of her “death lists” of tasks that prepared her young children for the future included writing letters that they can open on important occasions, such as first dates and wedding days. She also arranged for hers her son Hugo to receive “a nice pen or wallet or cufflinks” and Eloise to receive “Tiffany bracelets and earrings” among other gifts to remember her in the future.
In addition to the physical preparations, the journalist had candid conversations with the children about their death. As expected, it was difficult! “God, how can someone have such conversations? and then you find yourself in the middle of them,” she explained.
In May 2022, when Deborah began receiving end-of-life care, she transitioned to hospice care at home. Surrounded by her loved ones, she was happy and at peace when she breathed her last 2 months later.

Hugo Bowen is the eldest son of Deborah James. The journalist was very proud of him and of “the person he will become.”
He was her support, her will to survive and her dance partner during chemotherapy. That! “dancer in chemotherapy”. So she created a tradition: dancing with the chemo pump, every cycle, for 24 cycles, when she was connected to the pump at home.

On her 14th birthday, Deborah took to her IG to say, “It’s a privilege to be your mom. I still can’t believe you’re taller than me now. (Not hard, I’m short!) but wow! These milestones fill me with a lot of gratitude for each day they give us. Life is short, let’s spend it laughing and loving, growing up.”
