A 1997 Maclean article tells readers that Joni Mitchell became pregnant at age 21 by Toronto portrait photographer Brad MacMath. But Brad left and when it was February 19, 1965, she gave birth to Kelly Dale Anderson.
Six months later, the baby was adopted by David and Ida Gibbs. They renamed her Kilauren Gibb. And until she was 27, she Kilauren had no idea that she was adopted. But that same year, Jon’s former roommate reportedly sold the story of her secret daughter to a tabloid. Then, in 1997, they finally met, and according to a 1998 Toronto Globe and Mail article, the experience seemed like a fairy tale to Kilauren. How difficult things were in Kilauren’s life right now. She was a single mother to her son Marlin and she also struggled to make sense of things with her strained relationship with her adoptive parents.
Despite this, Kilauren was always grateful for the upbringing she received. At one point, she said that she was trying to convince her adoptive parents (Ida and David) that she loved them and that she would not lose her. “I don’t know what she would have turned me into if I’d been raised a Bel Air brat,” were her exact words.

Kilauren Gibb’s biological father is Brad MacMath. He and Kilauren’s biological mother were art students in Calgary when she was conceived. They moved to Toronto while they were pregnant and talked about settling down, but when they were “not communicating”, Brad moved from Canada to California by himself. At the time, Joni was thinking of all sorts of ways to hide her pregnancy from her parents.
Jonah’s mother, Myrtle Anderson, stated much later that if they had known, they would have helped and encouraged her to keep the child.
