Josh Wilder joined Survivor 44 to indulge his adventurous side. When he was born, Josh was diagnosed with a congenital deformity called dry belly syndrome (in which his kidneys didn’t actually fully function). But luckily, he received a kidney transplant when he was nine years old from Kristen Reagle, a person with an adventurous spirit and lover of outdoor activities.
“She was just a very bubbly person. So I’m doing this for her. And for my family. And just because I love Survivor and it’s the best game show ever,” she explained.
Thus, after more than 22 years watching the series, he signed up for Survivor 44, stressing that he is “in a good place in his life.” At first he was just a “let me try this, go ahead” guy. But when he found out that he would be on the show, he learned how to open coconuts, fillet fish and build a fire in preparation. He even started eating more protein and bulking up to prepare for the severe food shortages he would face on the Fiji island where the series was filmed.
Aside from the obvious goal of winning the title of Lone Survivor and the $1 million prize, one of Josh’s dreams was to meet host Jeff Probst, and he did. “It was like the first moment I saw him on the beach was an incredible moment. I’m here, seeing the cameras was surreal. It was great to see him, to talk to him and to live in his aura,” he recalled.
Now, speaking of Josh’s time on the show, he was a member of the Tika tribe. Unfortunately, he lost the immunity challenge in the fifth episode of Survivor and used his immunity idol to save himself from him. But at Camp Tika, he was still playing the fake idol card (he lied about having another immunity idol in his pocket) and ignored Yam Yam’s apology.
However, Josh and Yam Yam really bonded over their experiences as members of the LGBTQ community. But this could just be part of Yam Yam’s ploy to get Josh to side with her and vote out Carolyn.
On the other hand, Danny and Brandon also discussed their interest in aligning with Josh in the future to keep their force together, which Carolyn was aware of. So she wanted Yam Yam to vote for Josh.

Prior to that, he worked as a foot and ankle surgery fellow at Emory Saint Joseph Hospital for one year and as a surgical resident at Western Pennsylvania Hospital for three years.
Also, before all of this, Josh worked at Buffalo Wild Wings after graduating from Princeton High School. Then, in 2006, he enrolled in a BS in Biology/Biological Sciences, General Major, at Washington & Jefferson College. And after graduating in 2010, he attended Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine for his DPM (Doctor of Podiatric Medicine) from 2012 to 2016.
