News Rosalynn Carter

Rosalynn Carter, a former first lady and staunch advocate for mental health services, has been diagnosed with dementia, her family announced Tuesday.

According to a family statement released by the Carter Center, “she continues to live happily at home with her husband.”

After being in and out of the hospital many times, former President Jimmy Carter was in hospice care at the couple’s home in Plains, Georgia less than four months ago.

He was the longest-serving president at the age of 98. From 1977 to 1981, the couple served in the White House. They founded the Carter Center in Atlanta in 1982 with the common goal of solving international crises, promoting freedom and democracy, and improving health.

However, the family notes that Rosalynn, now 95, began her fateful work on mental illness even before the center opened.

They say she advocates for better access to care and reducing stigma associated with mental health issues, first at the Georgia Governor’s Mansion, then at The White House and most recently at the Carter Center.

She writes about the isolation, pain, and suffering that caregivers often experience in her 1994 book, Help Yourself Help Others: A Book for Carers. She said she also wanted to provide some help by offering advice on best practices that have been gathered through several national surveys.

Focusing attention on you, the family caregiver, is one of the most important tasks I can accomplish as a former first lady, she wrote.

The goal of this book is to support you, empathize with you, and encourage you to speak up about your special needs. Of course, I hope this book helps you take better care of yourself, but I also hope it makes your life simpler and more enjoyable.

The Carters were married to the longest presidential marriage in US history; they first met when he was 3 years old and she was 1 day old. On July 7, 2022, they celebrate their 76th wedding anniversary. Together they have 4 children, 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
