Dale Brown is the founder and director of operations Detroit Urban Survival Training (DUST) and Detroit Urban Survival Training. He formed a survival system mixing different forms of martial arts including Kyokushin, Japanese Karate, Korean Hapkido Karate, Aikido Japanese Martial Art, Japanese Jujutsu, Japanese Judo, JKD and Chinese Qinna/Chin Na.
Dale uses his knowledge of martial arts and army firearms training as a paratrooper. He also has experience as a private investigator to create a modern tactical survival training system. The goal of this training system was to empower individuals with the ability to legally protect themselves from violent predators.
Speaking of how it all started, a woman was from the Belle Isle Bridge and was murdered in front of her young daughter with many helpless witnesses in plain sight. So, in 1994, she set out to teach families how to protect themselves on Detroit’s east side. Speaking to WXYZ Detroit, Dale revealed: “Our training system shows you how to calmly create peace like a normal person, not like a person who wants to fight.”

Commander Brown began threat control in 1995 by devising strategies, tactics, and logistics to rid his neighborhood of violent crime. This approach, with the help of the Detroit Police Department, has resulted in a 90 percent reduction in violent crime and a complete end to home invasions and homicides in certain communities.
The Survival Scouts program was founded in 1997 to teach young people urban survival skills and a strong work ethic. The basics of self-defense, avoiding gunshots, basic first aid, conflict avoidance, personal discipline, threat awareness, and problem solving were taught to youth ages 4 to 17.

There are tons of videos on YouTube and TikTok questioning the legitimacy of Dale’s teachings and his effectiveness. Most of the videos are funny videos, “you know if you try to do his technique and then you fly up into the sky” made everyone think that his technique wouldn’t work.
A similar YouTube content creator mocking his technique met Dale in person and later confirmed that Dale’s technique was legitimate. There were also anonymous police officers who confirmed that the techniques Dale taught worked in service. However, the question related to the statements of those police officers remains because they do not reveal their credentials.
But there’s one YouTuber, Shaun E. Sundahl, who also liked Dale’s technique for working in real-life shooting situations. He recorded the entire 11:47 video on Dale. In the video, he sided with Dale and even claimed to share a screenshot interaction with Dale.
So why should you trust him? Because Dale has worked as a veteran off-duty police officer with over 19 years of law enforcement experience, a police academy instructor, and a POST pistol, shotgun, and rifle marksmanship instructor. He claimed that the video was his personal opinion and did not represent any law enforcement agency.
