Damacio Diaz on Hulu’s The Killing District
Hulu is premiering a true crime series called Killing County that follows the story of corruption in a California police department and how it affects families. While the main subject of the show is Jorge Ramírez, Jr., viewers may also meet former police detective Damacio Díaz.
Damacio, a former detective with the Bakersfield Police Department, was sentenced today to five years in prison for bribery, possession and attempted possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. He also made and subscribed to a false tax return, Acting United States Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced.
On December 5, 2016, U.S. District Judge Lawrence J. O’Neill ordered Damacio to begin serving his sentence. On May 31, 2016, Damacio pleaded guilty to the charges. Patrick Mara, 36, of Bakersfield, a former partner of Diaz, pleaded guilty to similar charges on June 20, 2016, and is scheduled for sentencing on October 17, 2016.
Court records indicate that between April 2012 and February 2015, Damacio handled a criminal informant involved in the widespread sale and distribution of methamphetamine while working as an officer with the Bakersfield Police Department (BPD). Despite being fully aware of the informant’s persistent illegal conduct, Damacio continued to manage the informant.
During this period, the informant offered Damacio bribes in exchange for information on police operations, as well as protection from surveillance and arrest. While working for the BPD, Díaz accepted illegal bribes and participated in the drug trade. On September 20, 2012, in the performance of his job duties, Damacio stopped a car driven by two people from Yakima, Washington, and conducted a search of the vehicle with the assistance of a BPD handler and a police dog.
During the investigation, a large chest was found with several bags containing about 10 kilograms of methamphetamine. The BPD dog handler did not remove any drugs from the car; instead, he turned the situation over to Damacio and Mara, who took control of the methamphetamine seizure and oversaw the investigation of the incident.
About a pound of methamphetamine from the car stop was searched by Damacio as evidence a week later. The remaining nine kilograms of methamphetamine were kept by Damacio and Mara, who later sold it for their own benefit. The plea agreement states that Damacio also filed a 2012 combined income tax return that falsely reported a total income of $168,485 and omitted at least $97,900 in additional income.

In May 2020, the news of Damacio Díaz’s release after serving his sentence made headlines. He was released from a foster home in Sacramento, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Both had their sentences reduced. His partner, Mara, was released in April of the same year after serving just under four years in federal prison.
Damacio hasn’t updated his LinkedIn yet. He is said to have served as a detective with the Bakersfield Police Department since July 1998. From 1996 to 1998, Damacio served as a police officer with the Tulare Police Department. Additionally, Damacio graduated from McFarland High School. He attended the College of the Sequoias from 1990 to 1992.
