Who are the parents of actress Katie Douglas?

Actress Katie Douglas was born to parents Jayne Douglas and Sean Douglas. The couple welcomed her daughter on October 19, 1998 as one of her four children. She previously stated in an interview that her parents were not enthusiastic about her acting career.

Katie said: “Actually, I was very young when I got the chance. I think she was at a summer camp after school when she was six years old. We put on a play and one of the parents in the audience was a casting agent. They sent me to sign the contract and that’s how I started. I did commercials and modeling and other things.”

She then added: “My parents weren’t necessarily excited about it, but when they saw the pay, they thought about college, so they let me keep doing it. It’s followed me all my life and I think I’ll always have a love affair with acting, but now I’m in college and I’m grateful for a young career that can pay for it.”

Meet Jayne Douglas, mother of Katie Douglas

Jayne Douglas is the mother of actress Katie Douglas. She and her husband run the winery together, and the property on Ridge Road has been in Jayne’s family for generations, dating back to the 19th century.

His great great grandfather was ED Smith and his grandmother held on to this land because she wanted to keep it in the family and as a farm. Fruit trees from the original orchards still blend in with the shrubbery along the edge of the property, barely visible from the back window of what is now the main building, and the couple plans to keep it that way.

“Twenty-five years ago,” Jayne said, “we took a trip to France and that’s when it all started for us. We always knew this property was here and might be available, and we thought a lot about it.”

Growing up, Katie and her siblings spent weekends in Burlington living the suburban life, and on weekends the whole family breathed the fresh country air on the farm. “Our kids spend most of May by the pond outside,” says Jayne. “There are bullfrogs big enough to lift with two hands.”

  • Sean Douglas’s work

Sean Douglas is co-owner of Ridge Road Estates Winery. He previously worked as an accountant for 20 years before deciding to pursue his passion for winemaking full-time in 2011. “It was now or never,” Sean said at the time, “I needed to make the leap.” Ridge Road Estates Winery officially opened its doors in September 2009 and is now a wholly family owned business enjoying the undivided attention of both owners.

He co-owned the business with his wife and planned to turn their boutique winery into a regular destination for those who live and travel in the area. The couple say there’s a growing interest in all things local, and they intend to capitalize on this trend and get as involved as they can by buying local products and using the skills of nearby artists.

Situated on 60 acres of property (12 grapes currently growing), Ridge Road is a great new addition of dark wood and orange accents to the growing list of southern Ontario wineries, especially hillside wineries that keep farming traditions in some of the best farmland in the province.

There are two distinct grape-growing areas in the region: Niagara-on-the-Lake and the Bench area at the top of the escarpment. According to Sean, the wind patterns flowing up and over the escarpment (represented by the orange dotted Ridge Road line in the logo) keep the temperature just right. But more importantly, the mineral state of the soil gives the grapes unique flavors. “We plant what grows best here,” Sean says, “like Rieslings, Chardonnays, and Pinot Noirs.”

The couple spends seven days a week, from May through December, producing small-batch vintages and greeting guests with a smile, serving up free samples, answering questions, and encouraging guests to expand their wine taste and vocabulary.

“Most of the people who visit the winery are not wine experts,” Jayne said. But that’s not what it’s about. Some people who come to the tasting bar may be intimidated, but we try to eliminate that. The education we provide to each customer is all about finding what they like. That’s what matters in the end.”

Like most artisan wineries, they are very proud of the accolades they have received and are inspired by the myriad of Ontario wines that are promoted and entered in competitions around the world. The winery won two gold medals at the 2010 All-Canadian Wine Championships in May.

“Last year it was very hot and very dry and great for the reds,” Sean said. Ridge Road plans to focus on what works best in the clay loam soil at the top of the escarpment. Bottled results included a sedate Chardonnay, a fruity tropical Riesling, a brash Cabernet called Call me a Cab, and the “jewel in the crown” Vineridge Blend, a unique blend of Traminette grapes.

“It’s not often that you get to try something completely different,” Sean says as he pours a glass of this unusual variety. Ridge Road is one of the few wineries growing this type of grape, “a hybrid developed at Cornell University to grow well in New York State (and the region).

Sean studied viticulture and oenology at the University of Guelph, practiced with other potential vineyard owners, and gradually built the two-story main building that now houses the wine tasting bar and barrel storage area. That project took six years to complete, “a hobby he calls ‘stress relief.’

For nine years, before beginning to make their own wine, the couple learned about the capabilities of the soil by growing grapes and selling them to aficionados in the area. Now, everything harvested goes to their own bottles and businesses.
