Yam Yam Arocho in Survivor 44
Survivor season 44 featured more queer gamers than ever before. More specifically, there were at least 50 percent BIPOC, and one of them is our star Yam Yam Arocho, who joined the show because it has always been his dream. In fact, he’s been dreaming about it since the first episode of Survivor aired in 2002.
“I remember I was 13 years old. My parents had just bought this house. We sat on the floor and ate pizza. And this show came on. And I remember Richard Hatch sitting on that branch and saying, ‘My name is on the million dollar check. “And I couldn’t stop talking about this program,” he recalled.
So the whole time on Survivor, he was playing that little kid, that teenager who was happily watching the show with his family.
Furthermore, Yam Yam believed that he would surely win the show because his life experience had prepared him more. For example, he talked about the time Hurricane Maria destroyed Puerto Rico. However, he was lucky not to have as many distractions at his home or business. But with a lack of resources and running a business of more than 25 people who are so young, Yam Yam was forced to be the leader.
“People older than me were looking at me like I was going to give them answers and give them hope, ‘Are we going to be okay? Everything will be fine? Can we continue working? So once he got past the phase of dealing with the uncertainty of what was going to happen, she felt invincible.
Last time we checked (past ep. 1), Yam Yam was still in the competition.
How old is Yam Yam Arocho?
Yam Yam Arocho was 36 years old when he appeared on Survivor 44 in 2023.

The Yam Yam Arocho family
Yam Yam Arocho comes from a Puerto Rican family and said he was proud to have the opportunity to represent his husband, mom, dad, brothers, nephews, friends and colleagues on Survivor 44.
Likewise, his mother Sandra Miranda is proud of her son for participating in the show. Last we checked, Sandra was working as a hair specialist at her salon, Miranda Beauty @mirandabeautypr.
Unfortunately, Yam Yam’s parents have been at odds since he was a child. So the star is closer to his mother because she is always there in her life.
On Mother’s Day, he dedicated an IG post to her, writing, “Thank you for the constant love you give us. For the unconditional love and support. And give yourself completely to us forever. Talking about his siblings, Yam Yam has three siblings named Miguel Angel, Jorge Manuel, and Melania Sofia. According to the star, his brother doesn’t talk much. But before Yam Yam joined the show, his brother told him, “You were chosen for who you are. You are what you want to be. And you are enough as you are. Be yourself and it will be great.” This was the best advice he had ever received.
Partner Yam Yam Arocho
Yam Yam Arocho married his partner Karim Sáenza on March 23, 2021. Since then, he has never stopped marking their anniversaries on his IG. “The memories of this year were good and a path of growth. Thank you for allowing us to live together all these days and grow from each experience, conversation, laughter and crying, ”she posted on her IG on her second wedding anniversary.
In fact, he even celebrated his ½ anniversary on September 24, 2021 in a post on IG, captioned: “HAPPY 1/2 ANNIVERSARY 👯♂️ Living day to day with you and I can see your constant hard work and determination; It makes me know that I want to continue living all the achievements that you will achieve.”
Now the two live in San Juan, Puerto Rico with their two babies (a dog and a cat).
Fun fact: Yam Yam said that she became engaged to her partner 54,086,400 seconds after the day she met him. That’s about 20 months.
What does Yam Yam Arocho do for a living?
Yam Yam Arocho followed in his mother’s footsteps and is now a hairdresser. He has worked at his mother’s Miranda beauty salon for more than 11 years.
Before that, he worked for one year at Eataly, for the second year as “Garde Manger & Pastry” at Allegretti and for 3 months as “Casting Editor” at City Lights Television.
Regarding his education, Yam Yam graduated from Syracuse University with a degree in television, radio and film. She also attended a year-long culinary course at the International Culinary Center.
