Eugene Lee Yang loves his parents, Jae-Hong Yang and Min-Yeong Lee, who immigrated to the US from Seoul, Korea in 1976.
According to him, his mom and dad worked hard for him to be where he is today. They fled the war and endured countless years of “discrimination, hardship and pain,” all to raise their children to be “high-ranking, college-educated, first-generation kids from the ground up.”
Unfortunately, Eugene’s parents separated when he was only 13 years old. But their split also allowed them to become “much more open-minded” about their son’s sexuality.
In the tweet, Eugene even shared a joking conversation with his mom and sisters about plans for the future. He would say: “My sister: do you want to remarry? Mom: No, NEVER Me: What do you want? Mother: [Pause] Maybe I’ll find gay friends, Me and my sisters: ***SURPRISED***, Mom: I found out they’re so much smarter, funnier, and better than my husband! My sisters and I: [Crying emojis and laughing emojis.]”
Also, in 2020, Eugene tweeted a description of a “mom’s journey to having a gay son,” to the point where she felt comfortable enough to start questioning him about sexual positions!
It read: “13 – “What girl do you like?” 18 – “wtf NO, you can’t be gay” 23 – “it’s a big city thing, you’ll get over it” 28 – “so how’s your ~mate room~” 33 – “…ok MAYBE you’re gay” today – “what do you mean when you say bottom””
Well, getting a 30+ year old Quranic mother to participate in this conversation was an achievement for the director. “Then it is possible that those who love you will grow with your homosexual journey,” he noted.
