Netflix’s Sins of Our Mothers: Meet Lori Vallow’s Friend Melanie Gibb

While teaching a lesson at a local Latter-day Saint church near Melanie’s home base in Gilbert, Arizona, in October 2018, Lori and Melanie first met. They hit it off right away. Lori met famed end-time author and speaker Chad Daybell when they agreed to attend a religious conference together in St. George, Utah, only to become so close in just a few short weeks.

Even though they were both married, Melanie saw their initial attraction and how they eventually became a couple, but she didn’t interfere as their friendship grew.

Melanie and Lori have been doing everything together, from attending more conferences to producing faith-based podcasts to getting to know each other better, but that all changed at the end of 2019. This stems from Lori’s claim that JJ, her son from 7 years. He was with Melanie when police arrived at her home on November 26 to check on her at the request of Kay and Larry Woodcock.

As if that wasn’t enough, Melanie claimed that Lori and her new husband Chad tried to talk her into going along with the scam to protect them, which shocked and embarrassed Melanie in every way.

Melanie claims that Lori once referred to JJ and her missing 16-year-old daughter, Tylee, as “zombies” to her, leading her to think there was probably a lot more to the story than she realized. On December 6, 2019, she contacted local police to reveal the couple’s alleged deception and the fact that they had previously informed her that they were on a mission to rid the world of “zombies.”

Despite her admittedly radical views, Melanie never really believed in her ideologies. However, she was now truly terrified because she thought that the royal lives were in great danger.

Police later posted the Chandler Police interview with Melanie in August 2020 here.

Where is Melanie Gibb today?

In August 2020, it was reported that Melanie also recorded a call several months after Lori’s children went missing, which was played at Chad Daybell’s preliminary hearing. On the call, Lori tells Gibb that her son, Joshua “JJ” Vallow, is “safe and happy” but she can’t tell anyone where she is because all kinds of people are looking for her. Investigators believe JJ and his 16-year-old sister Tylee Ryan had been dead for months at the time, and Lori’s brother Alex Cox buried them on Chad’s property shortly after they were last seen in September.

Investigators said Melanie stayed at Lori’s house during the key period during which JJ was last seen in September. Melanie testified that Lori babysat JJ the night of September 22 while Gibb, Lori and Gibb’s boyfriend recorded an episode of their podcast, “Time to Warrior Up,” between 9 pm and after midnight.

“[Alex] dressed [JJ] and he was sleeping,” Melanie testified about the last time she saw JJ. The next morning, when she woke up and went downstairs to talk to Lori, she didn’t see the boy.

“I saw [Chad] like a hand and [Lori] like a doll in that hand,” Melanie once said. “They were both like gasoline and fire. It’s not a good match. But equally destructive to each other. So, in a way, they were equal partners, insofar as they were destructive to each other. They both had deceit in them.”

“Part of me is processing; “I can’t believe you’re friends with these people,” Melanie told NBC’s “Dateline” in 2020.

It’s important to note that Lori’s lawyers claimed in 2020 that her former best friend and then-boyfriend, David Warwick, were “heavily involved” in JJ and Tylee’s ultimate fate, but there was no evidence of this.
