AMD RX 7900 XTX vs. Nvidia RTX 4090: the ultimate flagship GPU battle

AMD’s latest Radeon RX 7000 series is Team Red’s answer to Nvidia’s RTX 40 series. For Nvidia, the current reigning leader of the pack is the RTX 4090, an expensive but immensely powerful GPU. In AMD’s case, we have two cards that sit near the top: the RX 7900 XT and the RX 7900 XTX. How does AMD’s new headliner, the XTX, compete with Nvidia’s flagship?

If you’re wondering which GPU will reign as the best of the best, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve tested both cards extensively and we know the answer.

Prices and availability

Nvidia’s flagships are known for many things, but low price is not one of them. The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 was released on October 12, 2022, and the base Founders Edition model costs $1,599. Custom versions made by Nvidia’s partners like MSI, Gigabyte and Asus cost more, in some cases close to $2,000.

The GPU sold out quickly at most retailers despite the incredible price. Resellers are trying to resell it, charging pretty high markups, so you may still not be able to get the RTX 4090 at the recommended price. We hope that over time the price will normalize.

AMD is usually a bit more reasonable than Nvidia when it comes to the pricing of its products, and this is also true when it comes to the new line. The RX 7900 XTX is certainly more affordable. First announced on November 3, the GPU launched on December 13 at a price of $1,000. For reference, the not-so-flagship RX 7900 XT launched the same day with a price tag of $900.

This makes AMD’s new flagship much, much more affordable, but there are still other things to consider, such as the specs and performance of Nvidia and AMD cards.

Both the RTX 4090 and RX 7900 XTX feature new technologies and architectures for their manufacturers. In the case of Nvidia, the RTX 4090 is the flagship model, built on the new Ada Lovelace architecture and TSMC’s N4 manufacturing process. For AMD, the Radeon RX 7900 XTX is the queen of the mountain, followed by the RX 7900 XT.

The new AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX belongs to AMD’s latest RDNA 3 lineup, is based on the 5nm process and contains the Navi 31 XT GPU die. AMD took an interesting new approach, similar to the one used in the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, and used a 5nm graphics compute die (GCD) as well as a 6nm memory cache die (MCD) on the same GPU, stacking them one on top of the other. . This allows the GPU to get more power, aided by 96MB of Infinity Cache memory.

Unfortunately, while the power of RDNA 3 gives the 7900 XTX a significant improvement over its predecessor (the 6900 XT), it’s no match for Nvidia’s GPU behemoth. Instead, AMD’s flagship is positioned against Nvidia’s RTX 4080.

Here’s how the two flagships compare in terms of specs.

Performance

Average 4K performance for RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX.

We had the opportunity to thoroughly test both the RTX 4090 and RX 7900 XTX, including gaming tests and synthetic benchmarks.

The verdict is clear: both GPUs have their strengths, but the RTX 4090 is a very powerful card and easily the best on the market right now. However, it’s expensive, and there aren’t many games that can take full advantage of its intensive capabilities.

Nvidia’s flagship model is capable of smoothly running AAA games at maximum settings and in 4K. He even tested himself by running Gensha’s influence at 13K, which, while impractical, is a pretty crazy feat. On the other hand, the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX is a powerful graphics card that is perfectly suited for 4K gaming, but cannot compete with the RTX 4090 when it comes to raw performance.

In our 4K gaming tests, the RTX 4090 managed an average of 113 frames per second (fps). Compared to the 76.4 fps that the RX 7900 XTX was able to deliver, the RTX 4090 looks like a real beast. There’s no question about it: we expect a 47% increase for the 4090. Comparing the RX 7900 XTX against the RTX 4080, however, is much more favorable; although Nvidia still wins, the difference is quite small.

The RTX 4090 provides a 48% increase over the RTX 3090 Ti and a 68% increase over the AMD RX 6950 XT. No one should buy this GPU just for 1440p gaming though – there are great 1440p graphics cards out there that won’t set you back $1600.

RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX performance in Cyberpunk 2077 with ray tracing.

Nvidia’s RTX 4090 also provides access to superior ray tracing capabilities and the latest DLSS 3 that can output full frames instead of just pixels. This all adds up to fantastic gaming performance, albeit at a hefty price.

Historically, AMD hasn’t been as good at ray tracing as Nvidia, and that’s still true in this generation. We tore up both cards with the game. cyberpunk 2077 in 4K on maximum settings with ray tracing enabled. The RTX 4090 made it quite playable at 42.9 fps, but the RX 7900 XTX trailed behind at just 21.5. The difference isn’t just due to the fact that the 4090 is simply a higher-end card, as the RTX 4080 performs better at 29fps. Simply put, AMD may have honed its ray tracing chops this generation, but Nvidia has nothing to worry about on the matter.

Price per frame for RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX.

However, this time AMD made its big bets on performance per watt and performance per dollar. It’s a fairly well balanced GPU as a result, and if you’re around the recommended price, it’s excellent value for money for 4K gaming. As you can see in the table above, the RX 7900 XTX has the lowest price per frame when you consider MSRP.

Depends on your needs

Based on our tests, which GPU will be better? Is Nvidia’s RTX 4090 the winner or is AMD’s RX 7900 XTX holding up?

The answer shouldn’t come as a surprise: Nvidia will maintain its place at the top of the list of the best graphics cards available right now, and until Nvidia releases a follow-up (like the RTX 4090 Ti), that’s unlikely to happen. . change.

The RTX 4090 is an incredibly powerful GPU, capable of handling most anything you can imagine. On the other hand, it is expensive and has not escaped controversy during its (still short) print run. It’s a huge card, and the cable that comes with it can’t be bent, which means there have been cases where the power connector and cable have been torn under pressure. Of course, this problem only seems to affect a small percentage of RTX 4090 owners, but it’s still a problem that AMD has completely avoided, as it doesn’t use the 12VHPWR connector that seems to be the culprit in Nvidia’s case.

AMD’s RX 7900 XTX was never intended to compete with the RTX 4090. That said, it’s still an excellent graphics card and offers excellent value when the price is close to $1000. If you don’t care too much about ray tracing. but you still want a GPU that can power 4K gaming, the AMD card is a great alternative to both the RTX 4090 and 4080.

If you’re wondering which GPU to buy, the answer depends on how much you want to spend and how much you really need of the top performance that the RTX 4090 provides. If you’re looking for better value, get the RX 7900 XTX. If all you want is great performance, the RTX 4090 is definitely the most powerful GPU.
