My phone still has a PopSocket, and this is why I love it

Interest in PopSockets seems to have come and gone relatively quickly. While they’re still popular abroad, they seem like a rarity in the US, which is strange considering how popular they were in the mid-2010s, only to disappear seemingly overnight.

It’s gotten to the point where I’m the last PopSocket user among my friends. That’s unfortunate because PopSockets are great as a result and I feel like a lot of people are missing out.

I hold my phone tight

I’ve had a PopSocket in every phone I’ve owned since 2015 and have never looked back. For me, they are a part of mobile phone security that is an essential part of my smartphone experience. As phone screens have gotten larger over the years, the phones I’ve used have become more difficult to hold with one hand, but the PopSocket gives them a good grip that I can hold steady.

Gone are my days of worrying about dropping my phone and breaking the screen into a thousand little pieces. Instead, I was able to breathe a sigh of relief knowing that the chance of my phone falling out of my hand was virtually non-existent. This has freed me up in a way, making traveling much more worry free when it comes to keeping my phone safe. Also, the PopSocket is much cheaper than a replacement screen.

When I was in college I studied abroad in Australia and was often on ships, docks and other places where a dropped phone could end in complete disaster. However, I was able to take plenty of photos and videos, knowing that my phone was safe in my hands and that even if there was an unexpected bump or push, it wouldn’t go anywhere.

safe and secure

That kind of security is only available to me because of the convenience and quality of PopSockets. I was confused when they apparently disappeared from public view so quickly for making me feel safe. For about a year after its initial popularity, it seemed like you couldn’t go anywhere without being offered a free copy of a PopSocket with a company or brand logo attached to a circular plastic base. Now it seems that there are only branded products left, but they are no longer on everyone’s phones like before.

I think the problem PopSockets ran into in its early popularity was the fact that so many copies were made, most of which were of much lesser quality than the official brand. This meant that many people were only exposed to them with cheaply produced brands that broke easily and lacked the security that PopSockets offered. As a result, many people may have been put off by the idea of PopSockets in general, which is really unfortunate.

MagSafe PopSockets and more

Fortunately, PopSockets, the company, is still innovating its initial ideas and continues to create new phone-clamping products. The relatively new MagSafe PopSocket eliminates the need for a person to grab it in the perfect spot on the first try by magnetically attaching the grip to the back of a MagSafe-enabled iPhone. The MagSafe PopWallet combines a PopSocket handle with popular wallet accessories that hold credit cards and cash. The company has even partnered with Otterbox to make phone cases that have built-in PopSocket grips. There’s no shortage of new innovations when it comes to the security of the phone in hand.

PopSockets are the kind of accessory I didn’t know I needed before I got them, but now I can’t live without them. I used to teach high school students after school and they would make fun of my PopSocket saying it was a fad from the past that no one used anymore. While that may be true, depending on who you ask, should it really be? Every time a friend hands me his phone, I feel like I have to hold it with the kind of care usually reserved for newborns because of how much the phone slips in my hands.

The solution is simple, I say get a PopSocket and your days of worrying about broken screens will soon be over.
