James Gunn has received a lot of criticism as the new co-head of DC Films for canceling many highly anticipated superhero projects, including Iron Man sequel with Henry Cavill. However, he also intrigued many fans with the announcement of an upcoming Superman reboot that he wrote himself. For those who haven’t heard the news, Gunn will be producing a movie that follows a new version of Clark Kent through his early years working at the Daily Planet and protecting the people of Earth as Superman.

History
Basically Superman It meets Sign, brightburn follows a couple who adopt an alien baby who crashes near their farm in the titular town. On his 12th birthday, the boy, now named Brandon, discovers that he has many of Superman’s trademark powers, including super strength, the ability to fly, and thermal laser vision.
But at the same time, Brandon becomes more violent and sadistic, which is only exacerbated by being bullied at school. The spaceship that brought him to Earth ultimately forces him into “world rule,” making it clear that he hails from a race of evil world conquerors, far from the more benevolent Kryptonians who gave birth to Superman.
Wearing a red cape and demon hood, Brandon begins killing anyone who opposes him in a series of brutal, ritualistic murders marked by an emblem reminiscent of Superman’s “S” symbol. Brandon ends up killing his own adoptive parents in cold blood when they try to kill him, thus severing all human ties to him and completing his transformation into the supervillain Brightburn.
Brightburn vs. Superman
brightburn shares many similarities with Zack Snyder’s dark interpretation of Superman, which should please die-hard Snyderverse fans. The muted color and cinematography of the earlier film are dead rings for Snyder’s style in Iron Man. Similarly, both movies explore what could happen if an alien with godlike powers suddenly appeared in real life, and Brandon’s childhood journey reads like Cavill’s Superman.
People fear Clark and Brandon for their superhuman abilities and they both grow up feeling different from everyone else. While Brandon experiences bullying and isolation just like Clark, the latter’s parents teach him to hold back and use his powers for good. Because of this, Clark takes a more heroic path than his evil counterpart, who increasingly sees himself as superior to humanity.
However, the fact that brightburn took so much from Snyder’s Superman shows how Gunn sees him as one of the most definitive versions of the beloved comic book icon. Snyder’s influence on Superman could carry over to Gunn’s version of the character, which could win over audiences who still want to see the Snyderverse live on in the DC Extended Universe.
The Brightburn Legacy

brightburn It has its flaws, as it contains some plot holes, horror clichés, and CGI that looks unrealistic, even for a low-budget movie. Understandably, brightburn it received mixed reviews, scoring just 57% on Rotten Tomatoes, and is now one of the lesser-known films in Gunn’s filmography. It’s worth noting that David Yarovesky directed Brightburn and Gunn produced the film, which was written by his brother Brian and cousin Mark. Plus, Gunn wrote the script for the new version of Superman himself, and the movie will undoubtedly command much higher production value as a Hollywood blockbuster.
All in all, brightburn it has its merits. Its plot shows the Gunns family’s deep understanding of the Superman mythos, as it twists many aspects of the iconic hero’s history to create a supervillain origin story with many brutal and memorable deaths. There’s even a reference to Rainn Wilson’s Crimson Bolt during his mid-credits scene, showing that Gunn was developing his own cinematic universe before co-starring in DC Films.
All of this goes to show that James Gunn has been preparing to lead the DC Universe his entire career, and his success in the superhero genre shows that he’s ready to do so now. For these reasons, his Superman movie will certainly please fans of his and Synder’s movies.
