Even more strange is that famous Mexican director Guillermo del Toro plays the patriarch of the McPoyle family, Pappy.
Pappy made her successful debut in Season 8, Episode 3, “Maureen Ponderosa Wedding Massacre”, in which the McPoyles gather at the wedding of Maureen Ponderosa and Liam McPoyle. In the Season 11 episode “McPoyle vs. Ponderosa: Trial of the Century,” the wedding party — including Pappy — reunites to deal with the catastrophic event in court.
The Oscar-winning director happily humbled himself for his good friend Charlie Day. Del Toro said in a behind-the-scenes interview: “I told Charlie to give me the most humiliating role he could have in the episode, and he came up with Pappy McPoyle. The director plays Pappy with the unbridled exuberance of a man who spends most of his time behind the camera, talking incoherently about cannibalizing his children. “Pappy McPoyle is like Zeus,” del Toro cheekily declared. “He is the father of all the McPoyles. They come from behind him like the Titans of Greek mythology. And he must destroy them before they can eat him.”
Not everyone is ready to play the crazy-born patriarch in It’s Always Sunny, at least a respected director. It was the friendship between Guillermo del Toro and Charlie Day. The pair first worked together on del Toro’s 2013 beloved Pacific Rim.
For Day, Pacific Rim is an eye-opener—so much so that he managed to incorporate some of del Toro’s filmmaking techniques into the horror-inspired film The Maureen Ponderosa Wedding Massacre. After receiving preliminary footage, Day asked director Richie Keen if they could pull off what he described to Conan O’Brien as “a few shots of Guillermo.” This inspiration remains in the series “It’s Always Sunny”, episodes that have become more and more experimental and ambitious over the years. “[We] I’ve just started using more, as I call them ‘Guillermo shooting’ throughout the series, and am increasingly inspired to shoot more and create more things.”
Del Toro continued to play a key role in Day’s filmmaking journey, even providing Day with notes and instructions on his directorial debut, “Fool’s Paradise.” I am very much indebted to Guillermo Del Toro, Day told The Hollywood Reporter. “I would send him the pages and he would send them back with his notes. But he really helped guide me and gave me the confidence to go ahead and do the reshoot. This.”
