POV (point of view) is already a major keyword in online pornography, but virtual reality takes the genre to a whole new level. You find yourself in a room, unable to move. You are free to look around 180 degrees in front of you, and the room ends in a hard black plane around the periphery of your vision. Strip club rules apply, so look but don’t touch (as much as it sounds like you will). The recording process requires passivity, so your avatar never exerts more than a slight twitch. You can focus on whatever you want, be it the naughty parts, lovingly looking into the eyes of your virtual partner, in the corner of the room, trying to identify the books on the shelf.
It is difficult to describe in writing how upsetting the experience was. More than a close up and personality with POV video, VR porn is a different beast altogether. Even after experiencing a lot of VR over the past few days, my imagination couldn’t quite prepare me; Porn appeals to very animal parts of the brain, so finding it in such a personal way is visceral. The feeling of grandeur was perhaps the most memorable part. Unless you’re viewing on a really big screen, the people in porn videos are almost always pretty small, relatively speaking. It’s amazing to find them on a real human scale: sweaty, double-fake breasts bouncing inches from your face.

I watched the build demos from the male and female perspectives. For me, the video from the female perspective was perhaps the most interesting because it offered me a kind of out-of-body experience that I had never had before. Inhabiting the female form, elevated by a muscular wedge, is far from my typical sexual experience. In addition to opening up entirely new avenues of alienation, the ability to viscerally inhabit bodies other than our own has compelling implications for how VR experiences can be used to cultivate empathy.
My demo was on the Samsung Gear VR, but the videos are now compatible with just about every headset on the market, from the humble Google Cardboard to the sleek Oculus Rift. As for how they were filmed, “a mix of off-the-shelf and custom parts” is specific, as Ian Paul, CIO at Naughty America, told me. As a starting point, it’s very compelling and will only get better. When asked about the possibility of same-sex content, Paul mentioned 360-degree views as something that would help enable this, allowing for full immersion in the virtual bacchanalia.
While gaming fueled the initial advances in virtual reality technology, the popularity of pornography and apparent synergy with the medium is likely to make it a major factor in getting many people involved. Pornography is already a $3.3 billion a year industry, rapidly expanding to fill every available channel. Paul certainly sees VR as a huge game changer for the industry: “The entire history of pornography has been trying to get this kind of experience by any means available, and now it’s here. This is a big step forward.”

Not just some distant concept, this glorious future of total smut is available now, six months ago, in fact. It launched in July and new content appears at the rate of about one video per week. The VR videos can be accessed as part of a standard monthly membership to the site. According to Paul, there are two other smaller companies currently working on VR porn, but they don’t have the star power or market penetration of Naughty America.
Whether it’s the starting fluid for a vast and profitable virtual reality media industry or the final mighty blow to already skyrocketing birth rates in many industrialized nations, the future of pornography is here, now available in a private fantasy of virtual reality near you.
