How much screen protection do you really need on your new iPhone 14? Screen protectors are like cases: we don’t always want to buy and use them, but we believe we need to protect our investment from damage. But with that comes the expense, the awkwardness of setting things up, and sometimes a change in the feel of the glass under your finger.
The iPhone 14 Pro uses a special type of protective glass that Apple calls Ceramic Shield, which it says offers scratch resistance and four times the protection against drops compared to iPhone models without special glass. Does it make sense to put a protective film on the screen, and if not, how will your phone look after a year? That’s what we discovered.
What is the ceramic shield?

When introduced in the iPhone 12, Apple said glass ceramic was stronger than glass in any smartphone and “goes beyond glass by adding a new high-temperature crystallization step that creates nanoceramic crystals within the matrix.” of glass, increasing drop performance by 4x. Ever since my own iPhone 13 Pro arrived on launch day in 2021, I’ve been using it without a screen protector. During that time I did not change the phone, I kept it in my pocket, I put it in various bags, I left it on the tables and in general I used it but I did not abuse it. Do I regret not putting a screen protector on the iPhone 13 Pro, or did the Ceramic Shield glass do a good job protecting it from scratches and scuffs? You can see how it performed in the short video above, but understanding its effectiveness is about more than just seeing if you can spot surface scratches.
Scratched, but not too much
The iPhone 13 Pro screen has scratches, but more importantly, I can only feel one of them, and only when I use my fingernail. It sits at the bottom of the screen and appears to have more scuffs than scratches when viewed under light. None of the other scratches are noticeable, and I only notice them when the screen is off and light is reflecting off the glass. None affected screen performance.

I know there were scratches on the bottom of the screen, which also indicates how effective Ceramic Shield is at resisting damage in normal situations. I put my phone in my bag and instead of putting it in a special pocket, I accidentally put it in the main compartment with my house keys and various other items. It was shaking for a while before they took it off and that’s when I noticed the scratches. It was only a few weeks after owning the iPhone 13 Pro that I was still quite grateful for its appearance, so I noticed it right away.
One of the longer scratches on the side of the screen was definitely caused by the camera module on the other phone when the two were pushed against each other in my bag (again, accidentally) and then carelessly pulled out. I felt a scratch when I took the phone out, but it’s not something I can feel. I remember those situations specifically, but they weren’t unique. And even though this happened more than once, the other paths never resulted in a scratched screen. Either I’m lucky or the ceramic shield reduces damage well.
Is a screen protector worth it?
Sure, the screen protector would take those scratches and protect the ceramic shield underneath, and when you removed it, the original screen would still be in pristine condition. This is useful if you want to sell the phone in the future. In the meantime, though, you’ll need to use a phone with a screen protector, and not all of them have the same degree of feel as the actual screen they cover. Plus, there’s no denying how painful it can be to adjust them in the first place.
Considering how many scratches the iPhone 13 Pro has racked up in the past 12 months, and how many of them I can feel with my fingernail, Ceramic Shield has done an impressive job. My phone hasn’t been hit with a hammer or dropped from a great height, so I can’t speak to its superior performance. A screen protector can help keep the screen in one piece in more extreme circumstances, so if you’re accident-prone, it’s still a worthwhile addition to your new iPhone 14, along with a good case.
What will I do with my new iPhone 14 Pro? Given how well Ceramic Shield has protected my iPhone 13 Pro from scratches that I can sense or affect performance, I’ll probably let it do its job again.
