The overall plot beats aren’t too far off from the original, but there are some major tonal shifts that could set the stage for what’s to come. Resident Evil 4 ending explained
Like the original game, the remake ends with a climactic fight against Osmund Saddler. After a lengthy fight with a mutated cultist, Ada Wong saves the day by lobbing a red rocket launcher at Leon S. Kennedy. With an explosion and a stab to the eye, Leon defeats Saddler, but is thrown backwards onto a metal grate, dropping a sample of amber containing the plague virus. This is where the story begins to diverge.
In the original game, Ada Wong actually tricks Leon twice by taking a cross pattern from him. There is no explanation for the betrayal, as Ada quickly jumps into the helicopter, starts the timer for the bomb hidden on the island, and throws Leon the jet ski keys. She is a pure villain at the climax of the 2005 issue.
Things play out much differently in 2023. Instead of holding a gun to Leon’s head, Ada simply takes the sample while Leon is lying down and notes that she and Luis had a “deal”. She casually walks towards the approaching helicopter, vowing to take good care of the sample and climbs aboard. It’s not a dramatic escape; Ada even asks Leon if she wants to join him on the helicopter. As Ada leaves, an explosion rocks the island, causing Ada to throw the jet ski key at Leon. She does not plant the bomb herself, further eliminating the original supervillain ending. Instead, she asks Leon if she would like him to talk to her father (who happens to be the president) about having Leon assigned her insurance. He refuses, pointing out that she can take care of herself. It’s a sweet moment that addresses one of the biggest criticisms of the original, giving the “damsel in distress” a fuller character.
The remake threw in another outdated scene for good measure. The original game ends with a post-credits conversation with federal agent Ingrid Hunnigan, where Leon confirms that the mission was a success before informing him of it. “Story of my life!” she complains after turning him down, in one last tongue-in-cheek sentence. Fortunately, that whole streak has ended. Instead, Hunnigan can be heard on Leon’s radio as he and Ashley get to safety on a jet ski, looking for an update on the status of the mission.

While the new version reduces the codex requirement, it still includes a post-credits scene that is crucial to the future of the series. The scene actually comes from the original game’s bonus. The original scene takes place in a helicopter after Ada steals the Plague sample from Leon. She receives a call from none other than Albert Wesker, one of the main antagonists of the series, who reveals that he has been pulling her strings all along. In a supervillain monologue, he mentions that he is rebuilding the evil Umbrella Corporation and teases that “change” is coming to the world. She laughs maniacally as the helicopter takes off, preparing for what will eventually happen in the resident evil 5.

It’s a major change, as it once again presents Ada as more of an anti-hero than a cartoon femme fatale. Rather than being an active participant in Wesker’s evil plans, she is more of a victim that he used. After realizing why she was asked to obtain the sample, she betrays Wesker without hesitation and makes good on her promise to keep the sample safe.
What does this mean for the future? There are several ways to interpret this. On the one hand, you can see it as a way for Capcom to avoid redoing the controversial resident evil 5 Following. It’s a clean slate for new players that leaves the story of Scourge with a happy ending. But you can interpret it in another way. It could be a more explicit setup for the upcoming remake, establishing Wesker as the big bad and creating a new version of Ada who could play a heroic role in the story. It seems a bit lazy to purposefully leave the door open for whatever Capcom wants to do next.
