The Nigerian film industry, popularly known as Nollywood, is mourning the loss of one of its most celebrated actors, Murphy Afolabi. He died on May 14, 2023 at the age of 49. His cause of death has not been announced.
Afolabi, whose birthday was celebrated just nine days ago, has had an illustrious career spanning more than two decades. He was known for his roles in Yoruba films, a regional Nollywood genre, and was highly appreciated for his charisma and exceptional acting skills.
“Afolabi was a mainstay of Nollywood and his immense contribution will not be forgotten,” an industry source said.
The actor was born on May 5, 1974 in Osogbo, Nigeria. He grew up in a family that cultivated a deep love of art, which played a key role in shaping his career. He had the breakthrough of it in the late ’90s and quickly rose to fame in the early 2000s.
