Joshua Coakley is the property manager of the Hudson Theatre, just off Times Square in New York, founded in 1903. There, he is responsible for all the props, furniture, drapes and decorations, and for the upkeep of the magnificent 975 seats and theater artwork. .
“Everything that goes into the building, from the costumes to the wigs and makeup, everything goes through me. I assemble the pieces so that they fit together perfectly. So how did Joshua get into the theater? Well, he was intrigued by his older brothers who took dance lessons. In the end, he started dancing and then he went to the theater. Even at his high school, San Ignacio, Joshua would engage in speeches and debates to keep his passion burning. “The most important thing I got from St. Ignatius was the ability to ask the right questions and keep digging until you get a satisfactory answer,” he recalled.
He later went on to study drama at Marquette University. But after realizing how difficult it is to become an actor, he dropped out of school and started working as a technician at various children’s museums. There he discovered how much he loves the combination of education and play, developing exhibits and hands-on construction.
Eventually, through a series of strange events, Joshua found himself working as a prop carpenter at a theater in St. Louis, later going to the Alley Theater in Houston.
Her skill with props comes from her apprenticeship with a prop teacher at the Lyric Theatre. But Joshua attributes most of his ability to his willingness to take on any challenge. “I can look at a 1920s phone, take it apart, fix it, and make it work for the stage. Or if they can’t fix it, they can recreate it,” he added.
Unfortunately, after the 2020 pandemic, Joshua did not work on the commission for 22 months. He then sold his home and took his family off-roading in a rented RV, visiting national and family parks.
Trivia: Joshua’s most memorable performance was as Billie Elliot at the Imperial in 2008: his first Broadway appearance and his wife in the cast.
