How to program an RCA universal remote

Keeping up with the myriad of remotes in your media stash is never an easy task, especially when you need three (or more) just to watch a Netflix series or Blu-ray movie. Fortunately, there’s an inexpensive way to consolidate your number of remotes (and/or replace a lost remote), with the RCA Universal Remote. The company makes several universal remote controls that you can program to use with TVs, DVD players, VCRs, cable boxes, and the latest streaming devices like Apple TV and Roku.

RCA universal remotes are easy to operate, reasonably priced, and relatively easy to program. There are several ways to set them up, depending on the remote you purchased. To help you through the programming process, we have put together this step-by-step guide.

Before you start

The first thing you’ll want to do is make sure your universal remote has fresh batteries and the components and devices you want to sync are connected correctly. Ready? Now it’s time to connect your RCA universal remote to the hardware. There is more than one way to do this, and we describe the easiest methods below.

Automatic programming method

The easiest and fastest way to start syncing your devices with your universal remote is the auto-program method.

Step 1 – Turn on the component or device you want to set up, such as a TV, Blu-ray player, streaming device, etc. In this example, we will use the TV.

Step 2: Press and release TELEVISION button. The On/Off button on the RCA Universal Remote will turn on and should stay on.

Step 3: Now press and hold simultaneously TELEVISION and button On off button. The illuminated on/off button will turn off. However, it should come back on after a while.

Step 4 – Release both buttons after the power button lights up again. It should stay on.

Step 5: Now press and release game button on your RCA remote. If the TV (or the component you are programming) does not turn off after five seconds, keep pressing game every five seconds until the TV turns off. The remote checks for possible codes for your TV.

Step 6: When the TV turns off, the remote has found the correct code. Then press and release Vice versa button. Wait to see if the TV turns back on and press it every three seconds until it turns on.

Step 7: Press and release Arrest again to save the programming of the device in the memory of the remote control.

Step 8: Repeat steps 1-7 for each additional device you want to pair with the remote. Some RCA universal remotes can accommodate up to eight devices.

Please note that you can cause problems with the timing mechanism if you press the wrong buttons. There is definitely a learning curve that involves trial and error to successfully set up your remote. If you get to the point where you need to start over, all you have to do is reset the hardware, remove the batteries from the remote, put them back in, and follow the steps again.

direct code programming

Your RCA remote comes with a special codebook that can help you manually enter different codes for countless devices. Don’t worry if you lose your brochure or accidentally throw it away. We’ve got you covered. All the RCA universal remote codes you will need are listed here. To use this online tool, you may first need to locate the “Revision Number” of your RCA universal remote. This number is on the label under the batteries. You will need to remove the battery cover to access it.

Now let’s discuss how to program your current TV to your new RCA universal remote once you have the correct code. Again, these steps apply if you are setting up the remote with another device.

Step 1: Go to the TV section of the code book, find your TV brand, and circle all available codes.

Step 2: Turn on the TV.

Step 3 – Hold down TELEVISION on the universal remote until you see the power button light up.

Step 4: Continue holding TELEVISION while entering the first highlighted code. (Note that the codes will be four to five digits, depending on the remote control model.) One of the codes for a Samsung TV, for example, is 10812.

Step 5 – After entering the device passcode, press and hold TELEVISION button. If the power button is still on, it means that you entered the code correctly. Let go TELEVISION and start testing device commands. If everything is working correctly, the power, volume and menu commands should now control your TV.

Step 6: If the power button blinks four times, it means that the device code you entered is wrong. Go back to steps 2-4 to see the next available code on the flyer.

If after all this, the RCA universal remote isn’t enough for you, there are several other universal remotes on the market to try, such as the GE 33709, which is a great entry-level option that’s compatible with many AV devices.
