The Sonos Era speakers solve a major problem for Android users

The new Sonos Era 100 and Era 300 usher in a new generation of wireless speakers for the company, and our first impressions have been pretty good. They also close a huge hole that afflicted a fairly large segment of users. Android users are no longer left out of the Trueplay feature.

Custom tuning of speakers for your environment isn’t particularly new. Google managed to do this with its Nest Hub Max. Apple does this with the HomePod. But Sonos always needed a phone to listen to ambient sound and adjust the speakers. And to this day, that phone has always had to be an iPhone (unless you have a portable Sonos Move, but that’s an almost different product category right now. Stay tuned here).

It’s that simple, and Sonos keeps its message about the change just as simple in its press release. “Using the microphone array in the Era 100 and Era 300, Trueplay optimizes sound for the unique acoustics of your space with just a tap on the Sonos app.”

It’s at least worth acknowledging that while Trueplay on the new generation of Sonos speakers makes things better going forward, it doesn’t change the status quo for Android users who already own a Sonos speaker. Even the old Sonos Play:1 allows Trueplay – again, only if you have an iPhone – and the new hardware does nothing to change that fact.

But if you have an Android phone and are looking for a new Sonos speaker, at least you won’t be left out of the Trueplay circle anymore.

The new Sonos Era 100 and Era 300 are available to pre-order now and will be available on March 28. The Era 100 is $249 and the Era 300 is $449.
