Whether you’re having sound issues or need to remove AirPods from your Apple ecosystem, resetting your AirPods is a fairly simple task, and with iOS 16 last year, resetting them has become easier than ever. You can also check everything you need to know about iOS 17.

To help you reset your AirPods, we’ve put together this step-by-step guide to walk you through the process.

Put your AirPods in the charging case and wait

Step 1: Take the charging case and place your AirPods inside if you haven’t already. This also applies to AirPods Pro, where the reset instructions are the same.

Step 2: Close the case and wait 30 seconds to a minute. Apple advises doing this so that if one of your AirPods runs out of battery life completely, it can recharge a bit and be recognized by the case before the reset begins.

Step 3: If your case’s battery is low, it would be a good idea to charge it before attempting a reset. If the case does not charge, you will not be able to reset it correctly.

Activate and pair your AirPods

With iOS 16 last year, Apple introduced a dedicated tab for AirPods that you can find on the settings its iPhone app (described below), as well as custom surround sound for compatible AirPods products.

Step 1: Have the Apple device you use the AirPods with handy. Open the AirPods case so the Apple device can detect them, then pop in yours settings.

Step 1: Keep the AirPods case cover open. Find an indicator light to keep an eye on. This light is usually located on the front of the case for most AirPod models, although the first generation has it on the inside of the case.

Step 2 – Now turn the back of your AirPods and find Place button. This is a small round button under the case cover, marked with a faint outline.

Step 3: Hold down Place button – you should be able to feel it when it is pressed. Hold down the button and watch the indicator light on the charging case, which should start blinking white. After about 15 seconds, you should see the light flash yellow, then turn white. When this happens, you can release the set button. Your AirPods are now reset.
