How to reconnect the Chromecast with Google TV voice remote

When Google launched Chromecast with Google TV in September 2020, its simplicity, well-organized interface, affordable price, and (the first Chromecast) physical voice-controlled remote quickly landed it on many lists of the best streaming devices, including our . Although the device is already getting a bit heavy (no new version yet), Google appeased the masses in 2022 with a slightly cheaper Chromecast with Google TV HD, which is almost exactly the same but limited to a resolution of 1080p.

What these two Chromecast devices have in common is excellent voice remote control, the key that put Chromecast on par with the big boys like Apple TV 4K and Roku. It puts all the control over your Chromecast in your hands without having to mess with your phone. And while it couldn’t be easier to set up and use, like any piece of technology, sometimes things don’t work as they should and the remote can lose its Chromecast connection to Google TV.

This is what you should do if this happens.

Google’s Chromecast with Google TV is a great device, but the remote has been known to occasionally disconnect from the Chromecast. This problem can happen randomly, but we have a solution for you.

How to re-pair a Google TV remote that won’t connect

When the Chromecast is on, it usually automatically pairs with the remote without issue, but that’s not always the case. The remote and Chromecast communicate with each other via Bluetooth. If your Chromecast can’t find the remote, it will sound a chime. This ring is an indication that the Chromecast has stopped searching for Bluetooth devices and is therefore unable to pair with the Voice Remote.

If the remote isn’t paired with your Chromecast and isn’t responding, you’ll need to pair it manually.

Step 1: First, make sure your remote’s batteries are dead and installed correctly.

To return the Chromecast to pairing mode, press the button on the back of the Chromecast and it will enter pairing mode on the device, which you will be notified of on your TV screen.

Step 2 – If this doesn’t automatically pair with your device, press and hold on your remote back + Home buttons at the same time, without releasing them until you see the LED light on the bottom of the remote pulsate. This will put the remote into pairing mode.

Step 3: When you see the LED, press Home button on the remote. The remote should now be paired.

Restart Chromecast with Google TV

You can try restarting your Chromecast regularly, which will restart the remote pairing process.

Step 1 – Unplug the power cord from the Chromecast and wait three seconds. (Make sure you leave the Chromecast connected to the TV’s HDMI port.)

Step 2 – Reconnect the power cable to the Chromecast. The Chromecast should start searching for the remote.

Step 3: To make sure the remote works, press a few buttons on it.

Step 4 – Chromecast will begin the initial setup process as a new device. Continue with this process.

Resetting Chromecast with Google TV to factory settings

If these steps don’t work, try the next procedure. A factory reset doesn’t mean you’ll lose your data, but it does mean the initial setup of Chromecast with Google TV will need to be done again.

Step 1 – To start the reset process, find the physical reset button on your Chromecast.

While it’s on, press and hold the button on the back of the Chromecast. The light will start blinking yellow.

Step 2: Continue to hold the button until it turns completely white, then release. The Chromecast will reboot and the reset will be complete. You are now ready to set up your Chromecast again. After the Chromecast restarts, it will restart the remote setup process. Follow the same remote pairing procedure above.

You should now have reconnected your Chromecast to your Google TV remote and everything should work fine. If you’re still having trouble, you can check Google’s support page for more information.
