Suzanne Sevakis had a son, Michael Anthony Hughes, with her high school sweetheart in her senior year. At the time, they lived in a mobile home park on 28th Street near Cockroach Bay and in Town & Country Park in Valrico.
She was forced to work at adult clubs like Mons Venus in Tampa to support her family. In fact, Franklin made her do it. When Suzanne became pregnant with Megan Dufresne’s daughter, Michael was with him.
In April 1990, Suzanne died in an unfortunate incident. Franklin became a person of interest, but she had an alibi, but many assumed she arranged the “accident.” Shortly after Suzanne’s death, Franklin turned Michael over to state welfare officials. Officials found him a new family, he was adopted by Merle and Ernest Bean.

“We didn’t know she was missing until 2:00 p.m.,” Merle Bean said. “They took him away around 9 in the morning. We had no idea Michael was missing. If they had told us, maybe we could have told them right away that Floyd took him and given them a description.”
It was only after a request from the FBI two months after Michael was kidnapped that the Beans were able to publicly request the return of their son.
“If we could have talked, given a description of Floyd and told people what Michael was carrying, done something in the first 24 hours, I feel like they would have found him,” Merle Bean said.
On the day Michael was abducted, he was attending Indian Meridian Elementary School in Choctaw, Oklahoma. Franklin walked into the office of Principal James Davis and announced that she needed help with his child.
I think I’d better tell him I have a gun in my pocket and show him. . . . I’m ready to die, and if you don’t help me, you won’t live,” Franklin told the director. Floyd left the school with the boy and the principal. He drove the principal’s truck into the woods, then handcuffed the principal to a tree not far from where Michael lived with his new foster parents.
Describing Michael, Ernest said: “He wasn’t up to his age. He didn’t have the muscle control he should have. He didn’t speak at all. He was very hysterical. They delayed it.”

Years later, two FBI agents reopened the investigation and forced Franklin to confess to killing Michael. Investigative journalist Matt Birkbeck also recounted how Franklin confessed to Michael’s death. He said: “Floyd was feeling the pressure and he just ran out of patience. He turned and looked at me and said, ‘I shot him twice in the back of the head to make him go very fast.'”
Franklin also said where he buried the body, but Michael’s remains were never found.
After Michael’s kidnapping, the Beans stopped accepting foster children. But they eventually took a special needs baby with them, whom they later adopted. Kabreena Bean died on May 29, 2002. “We still mourn the loss of Michael, just as we mourn the loss of Kabreena,” said Merle Bean. “Michael’s case has no end.”
