Highest individual score in ICC World Cup history (1975-2019)
Achieving a high score in the World Cup is no easy task given the intense pressure of the tournament and the high level of competition, but many players have achieved the feat with ease. There are times when fans feel like they are watching a T20 game because of the explosive batting. Let’s take a look at the top 3 players with the highest personal stats at the World Cup below.
#1 Martin Guptil
New Zealand’s Martin Guptill holds the record for the highest individual score in World Cup history. Guptill scored a staggering 237 against the West Indies in 2015. Hitting the ball with a hit rate of 145.39, he needed just 163 balls to reach this milestone and hit 11 six and 24 four in the process. New Zealand posted a total of 393 on the scoreboard to win with 143 runs after the West Indies were eliminated in 250 runs.
#2 Chris Gayle
Chris Gayle, dubbed the “Space Boss” for his destructive shots, is widely regarded as the best T20 player in cricket, but he also showed off his batting skills at the ODI World Cup. He’s the only player to score three centuries – three hundred times in the Test, a double hundred in the ODI and a hundred in the T20I. At the 2015 World Cup, Gayle scored 215 times against Zimbabwe, the fastest and the tournament’s first double of the century. Gayle took 147 balls to score 215 runs and hit 16 sixs and 10 fours.
#3 Gary Kirsten
Gary Kirsten is known today as a successful cricket coach, but in the 90s he was a threat. The South African beat the UAE in the 1996 World Cup, scoring 188 times unbeaten in 159 balls. Kirsten hit four sixs and 13 fours in her rounds. South Africa won with 169 runs.
