Sleep like you’re in the Shire with these pre-made Hobbit homes

Green roofs have a double meaning when they are often covered in plants: they are green and environmentally friendly. They lower the temperature of the ceiling, reducing energy consumption and making things more comfortable for those inside. When you’re on top of a tall building, it’s like having a garden in the sky. When Green Magic Homes have their houses covered in greenery, they look like something out of the Shire.

Manufactured homes should blend in with the landscape, as long as you live in an idyllic meadow. They may look a bit out of place in your average suburb. The modules are made of FRP or fiber reinforced polymer. Apparently three people can assemble the pieces in about three days for the smallest house (almost 405 square feet). Screws, adhesives, and epoxy and polyurethane sealants hold everything together and glue the panels to the concrete beams that serve as the base. A 20 or 40 foot container arrives at your future home with structural components, wooden doors and windows, galvanized steel screws and elastomeric sealant.

FRP, which makes up 95 percent of the house, is waterproof, which is important when growing a garden on top. Designed to support the weight of soil and approximately 7.8-inch-thick plants, the house could even handle shrubbery, according to Green Magic Homes. Its design complies with the International Building Code, according to the company.

There are a number of pre-built homes, including the 405-square-foot Waikiki and the 1,917-square-foot Mediterraneo. The largest houses are $34.74 per square foot; the smaller ones are a bit more expensive. Waikiki will set you back about $14,998. It can be a small house, a gym or an office separate from your apartment. The $66,596 Mediterraneo is a four-bedroom, four-bathroom home that looks like a vaulted home reclaimed by nature. Earthquake resistant houses should be covered with native plants so they are virtually maintenance free.

The Florida-based company says it ships its assembly modules around the world from its factory in Cancun, Mexico.
