Yanise Monét is the girlfriend and future wife of comedian Sam Jay. They met through mutual friends in Atlanta more than ten years ago. The host of HBO’s new late-night chat show PAUSE with Sam Jay recounted how they had a brief encounter at a club before his friend’s car broke down outside Monét’s house later that night. “I was glad,” Jay recalls.
“And then we’d get together with a group and that’s how it started,” he said. “For years there were breaks, we’d hang out and hang out, talk and not necessarily hang out completely, while hanging out with other people.”
No matter who they were dating at the time, they always saw each other as family. According to Yanise, “I define family as people in my circle with whom my energy resonates.”
However, Sam shared some details about Yanise on her Instagram. In a 2015 tweet, Sam tweeted: “I almost didn’t marry my wife because she had her dreadlocks so I figured she would torture me with facts about Lauryn Hill.”

She prays a lot for me. She is a great token of love, and I really like her. So I certainly take it as an act of love. And I pay for things.
Despite having to deal with the death of her parents and stepparents when she was a young child, Jay and Monét eventually created their own chosen family.
“I think life somehow put me in a situation where I had to rely on friends and people more than usual,” he reflected.
“After my mom died and I drifted away from my family a bit, I had to find that connection with people by going to school in Atlanta or going out,” she says. “And now my definition of family is really based more on individual connection than necessarily lineage.”
Fun fact: Sam Jay proposed to Yanise Monét in January 2022. On Valentine’s Day, Yanise said they had been engaged for a month.
