The worst place to be while he works with the laser rings is at eye level, simply because his vision will be blurry when he jumps over them.

Grim also shoots fireballs from his mouth. He will puff out his chest and take a deep breath before unleashing a fireball or two. The fireballs move in a predictable zigzag pattern, up and down the screen. The best way to avoid a lone fireball is to zip past it as it descends. The best way to avoid the two fireballs is to fly over the top one before it moves to the top of the screen. Alternatively, he can be thrown between two fireballs, but this requires better timing.

What makes Grim’s first phase so tricky isn’t the fireballs and laser rings, but his tail attack. Two or three times during the stage you will hear a “wagging” and see the end of Grim’s tail bobbing at the bottom of the screen. This is your cue to move, fast. In just a moment, the tail will push up and form a vertical block in the sky. If you make contact with the tail, you lose one life point. The tail attack is one that you simply have to feel. A good rule of thumb to follow is if the queue is on the right half of the screen, move to the left half and vice versa. Because the clouds are constantly moving. Fortunately, this stage only lasts about 30 seconds if you keep shooting Grim. So he jumps and runs and avoids all three of his attacks.

The best way to avoid these attacks is to stay on the highest cloud on the screen. If you’re up high, the most you’ll need to do to avoid getting hit is jump and land safely on the same cloud. The smoke from Grim’s nostrils will also occasionally turn into flames. So you can’t get too close.

Since the movement of the cloud brings you closer to Grim at all times, we highly recommend using the Chaser or Roundabout weapons, which have the power to hit a target while they are not looking in your direction. Grimm’s final stage is easily one of the most difficult segments in the entire game. Grimm now has three heads, each of which shoots out small balls of fire that gravitate towards you in a strange motion that’s hard to avoid. Grim’s second attack here is to turn one of his heads into a flamethrower. A large flame covers the center of the screen. You must be in a low or high cloud when the attack starts to avoid getting hit. In our experience, going high is the best idea because you have more room to work on attack. This also gives you a chance to get in a ton of hits without the fear of getting hit by fireballs. Here you can go back to Chaser to make sure you hit him repeatedly.

Grim will repeat this cycle until he is finally killed for good.

For weapons, we recommend using the standard Peashooter and Chaser or Roundabout. Use a standard Peashooter for the first phase, a Chaser or Roundabout for the second phase, and a combination of both for the third phase.
