TCL’s 2023 mini-LED 4K TVs are shockingly affordable

TCL Q class QM8 mini-LED 4K TV.TCL

TCL has finally revealed its full lineup of TVs for 2023, and it includes a new flagship that’s sure to give Samsung and Sony some sleepless nights. The 98-inch QM8 isn’t TCL’s first 98-inch TV, and it’s not the first 98-inch TV to sell for $10,000 or less, but is the first 98-inch mini-LED TV sold at such a low price. Samsung’s only 98-inch 4K mini-LED TV, the excellent QN90A, costs 50% more at $15,000. Even the $2,800 85-inch model is surprisingly affordable compared to similar mini-LED TVs.

TCL QM8 Mini-LED QLED TV first look | WOW! TCL has outdone itself (and everyone else)

While the TCL QM8 is the big headline grabber, the company’s other 2023 TVs look like great values as well. By 2023, the company has split its TV lineup into two families: the more affordable S-class and the QLED-enabled Q-class, which is easier to understand than TCL’s previous numbers-based approach to the series (for example, TCL series 6). For now, with the exception of the entry-level S2 (powered by Roku), all of these models come standard with Google TV as their smart TV software. We’re told we can expect Roku TV releases of higher-end models in the future. Aesthetically, the S and Q classes look similar, with TCL’s frameless metal design appearing on all 2023 models, but there are significant differences within these TVs.

Interestingly, what you won’t find on any TCL TV from 2023 is 8K resolution, and none come equipped with a built-in ATSC 3.0 tuner. Here’s the full lineup.

TCL 2023 S-class TV

TCL 32S250R

TCL didn’t even mention the existence of this model when it sent out its press release, but if you go to tclusa.com you’ll find it like we did. At just $170, it’s the most affordable TV in TCL’s 2023 lineup (and the only Roku TV model so far). S2 definitely has no special features. With only 720p HD resolution and no HDR capabilities, this LED TV is arguably best used as a kitchen TV, or perhaps in the bedroom or on vacation if you have one.

The S2 only comes in one screen size: 32 inches. Still, with 3 HDMI ports (including one HDMI ARC), dual-band Wi-Fi 5, and Roku’s smart TV operating system, you get some decent options, including compatibility with Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, and Apple Siri via of Apple’s HomeKit platform. It also supports Apple AirPlay 2 for iOS/iPadOS/macOS screen mirroring, which is a useful tool. There’s also a game mode that will disable any unnecessary image processing for faster response times.

TCL S350G

TCL S class S3 1080p Full HD LED HDR TV.

As entry-level models from TCL, the S3 TVs are limited to 1080p Full HD resolution, but their HDR (HDR10, HLG) capability is arguably more important. TCL didn’t say how bright these TVs are, so it’s hard to say how good HDR will look. TCL notes that you can use the S3 as a PC monitor if you want, and it supports private wireless listening via Bluetooth headphones. As a Google TV-powered model, there’s Chromecast built-in.

One thing to note about the S3 is its limited HDMI ports. You only get two, one of which can be used with HDMI ARC.

All three screen sizes of the S3 are available to order now.

  • 32 inches, $162
  • 40 inches, $189
  • 43-inch, $209

TCL S450G

TCL S class S4 4K LED TV.TCL

A step up from the S3 is the S4, which features 4K resolution and enhances the HDR experience with TCL’s HDR Pro (Dolby Vision is added on top of the existing HDR10 and HLG formats). Gamers will appreciate support for Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) and Motion Rate 240 with MEMC Frame Insertion. In terms of sound, you get support for Dolby Atmos and DTS Virtual:X for more immersive sound and Bluetooth for wireless headphone listening.

On the back you’ll find three HDMI inputs (one with HDMI eARC), an optical audio output, and a headphone jack. The TVs also come equipped with a voice remote control and dual-band Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) connectivity.

All six screen sizes of the S4 can be ordered now.

  • 50 inches, $283
  • 55 inches, $299
  • 65 inches, $425
  • 75 inches, $648
  • 85 inches, $1,113

TCL Q class TV 2023

TCL Q650G

TCL Q class Q6 QLED 4K TV.TCL

As TCL’s most affordable Quantum Dot LED (QLED) TV, the company describes the Q6 as a high-brightness LED-backlit model. The Q6 uses TCL’s HDR Pro+: the “plus” brings HDR10+ to the list of supported HDR formats, along with Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG.

Like the S4, this TV has Motion Rate 240 with MEMC frame interpolation and ALLM support. However, the Q6 goes further for gamers with TCL’s Game Accelerator 120 feature, which combines 120 Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and AMD FreeSync support. In terms of audio, the Q6 gets Dolby Atmos and DTS Virtual:X, with Bluetooth headphone jacks. The legs are width-adjustable, and you get three high-speed HDMI inputs (one with HDMI eARC), an optical output, and a headphone output, and dual-band Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) connection.

All four screen sizes of the Q6 can be ordered now.

  • 55 inches, $378
  • 85 inches, $1600

TCL Q750G

TCL Q class Q7 QLED 4K TV.TCL

With the Q7, TCL boosts picture performance with High Brightness Pro LED backlighting, with a maximum brightness of up to 1000 nits. The backlight has more than 200 full-array local dimming zones that dynamically adapt to screen content. Its 4K panel has a native 120Hz refresh rate, which is helped by the Q7 Motion Rate 480 with MEMC frame insertion, plus Game Accelerator 240 (ALLM, 240 VRR and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro).

The Q7 benefits from TCL’s AIPQ Engine Gen3 with AI deep learning, an advanced third-generation processor that “intelligently optimizes colour, contrast and clarity for an unrivaled 4K HDR experience.” To back up that claim, the Q7 has TCL’s first-ever IMAX Enhanced certification for resolution, contrast, brightness, color, and sound.

HDR Ultra brings Dolby Vision IQ into the HDR mix (Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10+, HDR10, and HLG), and the Q7 gets the same Dolby Atmos and DTS Virtual:X audio as the S4 and Q6 (plus Bluetooth headset support). . You also get hands-free voice control, with a backlit voice remote, adjustable swivel feet, and four high-speed HDMI inputs (one with HDMI eARC). There’s also an optical and headphone output and dual-band Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) connectivity.

All four screen sizes of the Q7 can be ordered now.

TCL QM850G

TCL Q class QM8 mini-LED 4K TV.TCL

As the flagship of TCL 2023, the QM8 gets all the bells and whistles. Along with all the features of the Q7, the QM8 uses its mini-LED quantum dot backlight system that has thousands of micron-class mini-LEDs and up to 2,300+ local dimming zones. They are powered by AIPQ Engine Gen3, which uses them to deliver up to 2000 nits of maximum brightness.

The QM8’s audio system is enhanced with a built-in subwoofer and its stand is height adjustable, allowing you to fit different center channel speakers or sound bars under the TV frame. You’ll find the same four high-speed HDMI inputs (one with HDMI eARC) as the Q7 and an optical/headphone output. The QM8 gets a boost in the wireless department with support for Wi-Fi 6.

You can order the QM8 now in screen sizes from 65 to 85 inches, while the massive 98-inch model won’t be available until later this year.
