Nvidia RTX 4080 vs RTX 4070 Ti: picking the lesser of two evils

Nvidia’s RTX 4080 was around for a while, but the RTX 4070 Ti is a new version, and the circumstances surrounding it are pretty strange. At first, the GPU giant called this graphics card the “RTX 4080 12GB,” but it was a significantly lower-spec version of its counterpart. After a little backlash, Nvidia “cancelled” it, only to release it again a bit later, this time under the name RTX 4070 Ti.

Although the path it took to get here was unusual, the RTX 4070 Ti has now arrived, and we tested both graphics cards ourselves. Let’s see how they compare to each other.

As mentioned, the RTX 4080 and RTX 4070 Ti (also known as the 12GB version of the RTX 4080) were originally announced on the same day and were both supposed to arrive on the same date: November 16, therefore , a bit later than the flagship RTX. 4090. However, before that day came, Nvidia shut down the less powerful GPU, leaving the RTX 4080 to fend for itself on its release date.

The RTX 4080 and RTX 4070 Ti are based on the same Ada Lovelace architecture, but as you can see, the RTX 4070 Ti’s specs have been dropped significantly.

We get 4 GB less memory, 21% fewer CUDA cores, Tensor cores, and ray tracing cores. The 192-bit memory bus is also an issue for the RTX 4070 Ti, and as we noted in our review of the card, the RTX 3070 Ti actually has around 40% more bandwidth.

The RTX 4070 Ti’s CUDA core bulk places it between the RTX 3070 Ti and the RTX 3080. However, it has more memory than the RTX 3070 Ti and also uses the latest Nvidia technology such as DLSS 3 and Shader Execution Reordering (SER). .

To balance the score between the RTX 4080 and the RTX 4070 Ti, we ran a number of benchmarks, including gaming and synthetic tests. To get a complete picture of their performance, we also benchmarked them against some of the best graphics cards on the market right now.

Starting with the synthetic benchmarks, as soon as we leave we see that the true rival of the RTX 4070 Ti is not its sister Team Green, but AMD’s RX 7900 XT. In these tests, the RTX 4070 Ti was 10% slower than the RX 7900 XT. The gap between the RTX 4080 and the RTX 4070 Ti is bigger. In 3DMark Time Spy, the RTX 4070 Ti was around 15% slower.

3DMark’s Port Royal ray tracing test revealed another shortcoming of the RTX 4070 Ti: the GPU isn’t the ray tracing beast you’d expect from a $900 Nvidia graphics card. It falls behind the RTX 4080 by a score a 20% lower.

Moving on to the gaming scenarios, we tested the cards in 4K, 1440p, and 1080p. Nvidia advertises the RTX 4070 Ti as a 1440p gaming GPU, but at that price it should be able to run some games in 4K, and it is. Unfortunately, it’s also 20% slower than the RTX 4080, which makes the result unimpressive.

While the RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 maintain their undisputed places as the two winners in 4K gaming, the RTX 4070 Ti falls behind in a rather precarious position. It was outperformed by two AMD RX 7900 XT/XTX cards, and even the latest generation RX 6950 XT is only slightly slower and cheaper.

Things are better when we go to 1440p. The RTX 4080 averaged 159.3 fps in our test suite, while the RTX 4070 Ti maintained a respectable 134.4 fps. This means a 15% reduction in frames per second for the RTX 4070 Ti. However, its direct competitor, the AMD RX 7900 XT, fared much better at 146.7 fps, which equates to an increase of about 8 percent.

The margins over the previous generation of cards are higher here as well, with the RTX 4070 Ti maintaining a solid lead over the RTX 3090 and a 40% generation improvement over the RTX 3070 Ti.

At 1080p, both cards perform more than well, which goes to show that you should go with one of the best 1080p GPUs around – the 4080 and 4070 Ti are simply overkill if you’re looking for 1080p gaming. The RTX 4070 Ti averages 170.5 fps and the RTX 4080 holds a convincing lead at 191.7 fps. Both are far ahead of their Ampere counterparts.

4K ray tracing performance for RTX 4070 Ti.

Nvidia is the undisputed king of ray tracing, but the RTX 4070 Ti doesn’t quite live up to that name. At 4K, it’s close to the AMD RX 7900 XTX, which is surprising since AMD doesn’t usually have much trouble with ray tracing. Compared to the RTX 4080, it only maintained 34.3 fps compared to the 43.5 provided by its big sister.

Ray tracing gameplay certainly improves when we move up to 1440p. The RTX 4080 averaged 84.3 fps, and while the RTX 4070 Ti only managed 68.6, it still has a slight edge over all AMD GPUs. It is slightly faster than the RTX 3090.

Will you choose budget or performance?

It’s a tough decision to make between the RTX 4080 and the RTX 4070 Ti because, in a way, we’re forced to choose the lesser of two evils. Don’t get me wrong: both graphics cards are solid and certainly among the best available right now. It’s just that each has some drawbacks.

The RTX 4080 is often thought to be too expensive. Compared to the RTX 4090, which retails for $1600, it’s simply a worse deal, so much so that its launch boosted sales of the RTX 4090. It’s an excellent card that offers DLSS 3 and access to 4K and 1440p. games on ultra settings, but it might be cheaper to justify the fact that it’s simply much slower than the flagship RTX 4090.

The RTX 4070 Ti, on the other hand, is a drawback because it can’t hope to compete with the RTX 4080. That’s why Nvidia dropped its price, but prices could be higher when the card hits shelves. If it ends up anywhere near the price of the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT ($900), the RTX 4070 Ti will be in an awkward position in a market where AMD’s card (which isn’t much of a deal, either: the RX 7900 XTX is a better value). ) is actually a better option, as long as you don’t mind missing out on DLSS 3 and ray tracing.
