I drank the new Kirby-flavored bubble tea and it’s as sweet as he is

Kung Fu Tea announced a Kirby-themed post-launch collaboration with Nintendo back in March. Kirby and the forgotten land at the beginning of this year. Now it’s finally here and it’s called Kirby’s Fruity Flurry. We may never get to experience a taste of Kirby in real life, so this is probably the closest we’ll ever get to eating a puffball, well, at least a combined version.

As a video game journalist, it was my duty to go to the local Kung Fu Tea and drink a cup of cold Kirby to see if it tasted as good as it played. And to make sure that I had examined it thoroughly, I had another one. And one more, for “investigation”.

collector’s cup

I’m happy to say that Kirby’s Fruity Flurry is a lovely drink, albeit a very, very sweet one. Before we get into the flavor, let’s talk about the hardware. I mean the cup. It comes in a plastic cup with Kirby’s adorable face on it. The mug doesn’t seem any more durable than regular Kung Fu Tea mugs, so that’s an indication that it’s not meant to be reusable. However, the fact that Kirby’s face is on it gives the impression of being some sort of collectible.

You will most likely never see this mug design again, so best to keep it. Places like Starbucks were already selling limited edition mugs and ended up reselling them for higher prices on sites like eBay. I doubt this flimsy mug will experience the same phenomenon, but hey, you never know!

You can also show how students display empty liquor bottles on top of their cabinets. The mug’s design was placed in Kung Fu Tea advertisements for the drink, so those familiar with Kirby were tempted to visit their local Kung Fu Tea shop to at least try it out. That’s the power of marketing, babe!

The sealing cap shows both Kirby and the forgotten land and Kung Fu Tea logos. A QR code placed on the cover takes you to the game’s official website where you can download the Kirby 30th Anniversary wallpaper, shown below. It’s a very cute poster that shows Kirby doing various actions like inhaling, cooking, and riding a bike.

Obviously, you’re not here for my drink review. Do you want to know how violently It’s fruit, so let’s get to it. The official description of the drink is that it is a mix of blueberries, strawberries and a hint of lemon.

It tastes like you put 10 tablespoons of sugar and berries in my mouth.

It’s so sweet and cute that it could very well be one of the ingredients used to make the Powerpuff Girls. Fortunately, Kung Fu Tea offers the option to reduce the sweetness to different percentages, such as 75% or 50%. However, I decided to keep the same sugar level to experience Fruity Flurry the way the developers, I mean baristas, intended.

Fruity Flurry’s texture is much more of a traditional iced slush than a smooth bubble tea. The drink is topped with this unique red bean called the Berry Crystal Bubble which adds to the overall berry flavor. They look remarkably similar to Kirby’s red cheeks on the mug, making it a very nice addition to the drink’s overall aesthetic. The slushie look also gives the drink a rosy color that matches Kirby’s hue. It’s sweet, but only for a while. If you leave the drink out for too long, it melts and turns a blood-red color, not an attractive look for our favorite pink puff.

Kirby’s Fruity Flurry cost me about $6.25 before tax, which is pretty expensive as far as Kung Fu Tea drinks go. That’s like paying an extra $50 for the OLED Switch model instead of just $300 for the regular model. This is because the drink only seems to be available in a large and not a medium, so you are forced to pay a high price for it. Honestly though, it wouldn’t be Nintendo if they didn’t charge a premium, would it? After all, their games rarely go on sale.

Although the official Kung Fu Tea Instagram account says this is a nationwide promotion, you may want to call your local store to see if it’s still available. The first day of its launch I was able to buy it without problems at the nearest store. However, today I called the same store and they told me that everything was sold out. I called another store in my area and they noted it was still available there. So your mileage may vary. Truth be told, Kirby’s Fruity Flurry could end up being just as hard to find as the PS5.

There’s no clear time frame for this promotion to end, so it’s best to try and grab it while you can. Unfortunately, buying Fruity Flurry doesn’t get you a copy. Kirby and the forgotten land, no matter how big it is. All I got was a link to a 30th anniversary wallpaper that I could google for free.

Regardless, Kirby’s Fruity Flurry is a delicious drink to match the sweet and adorable temperament of Nintendo’s pink puffer fish. It is perfectly suited to those with a sweet tooth. However, if the sweetness is too strong, Kung Fu Tea provides the flexibility to adjust the sugar level, making this drink palatable to almost anyone.
