Meet Haven Barlow, ex-husband of Ruby Jessop
Haven Barlow was the husband of Ruby Jessop, but their marriage was not particularly planned. The original report revealed that Ruby was 14 when she was assigned to 21-year-old John Haven Barlow on April 23, 2001. Her “heavenly wedding” was performed with the support of the FLDS and took place in Caliente, Snowfall.
Ruby explained that she wasn’t sure if that was what she really wanted, though she had nothing to say about it. They were legally married in Nevada two days after her 16th birthday, on May 5, 2002. They were married before a judge in St. George, Utah.
In the end, they shared 6 children together. According to a court document from January 2013, they were 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, and 10 years old at the time. Their names are Smithy, Jewelle, Millie, Ernie, Sequoia, and Nettie. Ruby sought custody of the children, claiming she was denied access to them after she left her husband last year.
In 2012, Ruby “ran away” during a 15-minute window when her husband was out with the kids, and she had no choice but to run away and leave them alone.
The divorce papers also revealed that the FLDS and city police officers interfered with Haven when Sam Brower accompanied him to serve Barlow with the divorce and custody papers on January 8, 2013.

After Ruby fled the FLDS church, Flora Jessop, Ruby Barlow’s sister, also made some accusations against Haven Barlow. In her book, Flora accused Haven of violently raping her sister. According to the book, Ruby told him: “On my wedding night; I just had my period and it hurt a lot.”

However, a writer named Gary D Naler claimed on his blog that he had his first phone interview with Haven and Ruby. He wrote on his blog: “I asked Haven and Ruby specifically about these alarming allegations; even knowing everything I know about Flora, I wasn’t prepared for her answer. Frankly, based on what I have read and heard, in my own mind I have created kinder possibilities, albeit still around these alleged allegations. But I was totally surprised that the facts didn’t come close to what Flora was maliciously spreading.”
Gary quoted on his blog: “Did Haven brutally drive Ruby away and almost bleed to death? When I asked if that was true, Ruby was quick to reply, “Absolutely not! I’ve never been rap*d.” Haven added: “I absolutely wouldn’t do that. She would give my life to protect her.” Even before I heard it, two men who know Haven personally assured me that there was no way he could have done that. It was in complete contrast to the nature of him, his character, and his upbringing.”
Gary said he also spoke to Ruby’s mother, Pat, who confirmed: “Yes, I was there for the ceremony. Haven would not do such acts, let alone hurt anyone, and there is no truth to Flora’s claims of any brutality.” According to the blog, the fact is that Haven and Ruby did not have sex that night, nor in the days that followed, nor in the months that followed.
