Why is Bonal celebrated?
Bonalu is celebrated with great fanfare and celebration in honor of Goddess Mahakali. The best time to offer Bonalu to the goddess is during the Ashad Maasam or the season from late June to August, according to the most famous Bonalu legend. Goddess Mahakali is said to return to the abode of her ancestors. This practice is similar to how a married daughter would be treated if she visited her parents’ home every year on holiday and received special attention.

How is Bonalu celebrated?
During the Bonalu festival, families give gifts to the Blessed Mother and share them with their loved ones and guests. Women wear traditional sarees, jewelry and other fashion accessories for this important occasion. Teenage girls wear half-sarees or lehengas with cholis, jewelry, and other traditional details. Along with turmeric, bracelets and sari for the Holy Mother, they bring with them pots of a special rice dish cooked with milk and jasmine sugar in a fresh clay pot or vase decorated with neem leaves. , turmeric and cinnabar on it. top.

Every year, thousands of devotees gather to pay their respects to Mahakali. On the first Sunday of Ashadham, festivities are held at Jagadamba Temple in Golconda Fort, Hyderabad. Third Sunday, at Pochamma and Katta Maisamma temple in Chilkalguda and Matheswari temple in Lal Darwaza, ancient city of Hyderabad.
