The most expensive turntables in the world

There are people who casually collect old records, and then there are people who spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on old records. If you fall into the latter category, you probably already know that a regular turntable won’t work well for a special copy or first pressing record.

If you’re serious about your record collection and have some money to burn, there are plenty of expensive turntables out there.

5. Artus FMD Transrotor ($150,000)

Artus FMD Transrotor

Coming in last at $150,000 is Transrotor’s Artus FMD. We’re hesitant to simply call this unit a turntable, because once the deck reaches nearly 4 feet tall, it transcends the usual moniker. This beast, as we’ll politely call it, weighs in at a whopping 485 pounds, but its price isn’t all about physical dimensions and weight. While the solid aluminum construction certainly dampens vibrations, the Transrotor has a few more tricks up its sleeve. The turntable has gimbal suspension, which essentially places the record in a gimbal to keep it stable. Other features include a non-contact magnetic drive and a specially designed power supply for the cleanest signals.

4. R-evolution Meteor Audio Consulting ($180,000)

It’s not a flying saucer made of wood; is Audio Consulting’s R-evolution Meteor. It is not very easy to talk about this turntable without first looking at its design. The R-evolution was built “using a single whole tree that was dried for at least 20 years.” The wood is then CNC-milled, requiring “another two weeks of handwork” before it begins to take its final shape. An organic wax is applied to give it a smooth look, and the company notes that it can supply the product in black, “antique bronze,” or any desired color. From an acoustic point of view, the turntable has an optimized shaft and platter assembly to reduce vibrations in the air, with an active anti-vibration system.

3. Argos Transrotor ($250,000)

Transrotor is back on our list, but this time the company has upped its game by delivering a $250,000 turntable. The Argos has some of the same features as its brother, the Artus FMD, including a rugged aluminum design, non-contact magnetic drive, and a “special” power supply. What makes this unit unique is its chrome finish and the ability to operate two 12-inch levers at once, so you can ensure your favorite cartridges are always at the ready. The Argos is the same height and weight as the Artus FMD, at 3.9 feet and 485 pounds.

2. Reference Goldmund II ($300,000)

Reference Goldmund III

If you’re looking for a unique turntable, look no further. Only 25 Reference II turntables were made. These turntables aren’t entirely machine-assembled, either: the Reference II is handcrafted in Geneva, Switzerland. The turntable has aluminum and steel construction, creating a modern yet refined look. Inside, Goldmund includes a vibration-proof motor with 30+ pounds of brass, Teflon-insulated wiring, and a liquid nitrogen straightened belt.

1. Design AV Haus Dereneville VPM ($650,000)

Design AV Haus Dereneville VPM

That’s it – the top of the vinyl mountain. The most expensive turntable in the world is the AV Design Haus Dereneville VPM, which costs over half a million dollars. If you have $650,000 in one of your homes, this true German-engineered beauty could be yours. With a solid Corian casing that weighs over 130 pounds, the unit sits on air-suspended feet, which can be adjusted via a stepper motor and tracked using laser measurements. The board itself weighs around 45 pounds and uses Neodyn magnetic disks, while speed is measured via a pulse ring at more than 24,000 times per revolution. A built-in miniature camera allows music listeners to closely inspect the grooves of their records, with cartridge and stylus, during playback. Dereneville’s VPMs are controlled by two onboard microprocessors and a touchscreen remote, all of which can be easily upgraded via the turntable’s built-in Ethernet connection. Brilliant.
