Charlene Jeffs was the elderly and first wife of Lyle Jeffs, brother of Warren Jeffs of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS). Netflix has released a four-part series called Be sweet: pray and listen so Charlene also appeared on the show to give insight into life within the FLDS church.
Charlene did not meet her husband Lyle Jeffs until they were married in August 1983 at the age of 18. After Charlene Wall married him, they had, she testified Wednesday, “a wonderful life together.”
Lyle married eight others. The couple had 10 children and everything was going well until she was kicked out for “complaining” in 2013. In court, Charlene Jeffs said she was kicked out of a holy group within the church called the United Order in 2012.
Charlene told ABCNews: “I didn’t know what I was complaining about, but they said yes.” She was banished to the garage and then to the trailer. She was ordered to leave the church on September 27, 2014 for being “unfair”.
So Charlene left the church, but she fought for custody of her two youngest children, Suzie, 13, and Amin, 17 (2015). Charlene said: “I have two children at the moment who are minors and I really want to get rid of them. I want to get them all out because I no longer believe in what they are learning.”
Nine days after fighting for custody, Lyle signed off on custody.

Since Warren Jeffs was arrested for “sexual assault” and “aggravated sexual assault” and sent to prison for 20 years, Lyle took over the FLDS as second in command. Charlene remembered that when Lyle was made Bishop of Short Creek, he was suddenly full of money. “And our plate exploded into something far beyond what I considered modest,” she added. Suddenly, there were shrimp and lobster feasts and other “gourmet foods we’re not used to eating.”
Charlene told ABCNews that she still loves him. She would return to the church if things were to go back to the way they were when Lyle Jeffs’s father, Rulon Jeffs, who ran the FLDS before his son Warren Jeffs took over, was alive.
Charlene shared several details that gave insight into the FLDS church. According to court documents, Charlene claimed that “the bearer of the seed is a male chosen from a worthy lineage chosen by the clergy to impregnate FLDS women.” “FLDS men are no longer allowed to have children with multiple wives. That privilege belongs only to the bearer of the seed”, supposedly affirms the doctrine.
It also revealed that the spouses had to be in the room while the act of procreation with the “seed carrier” was performed. The “seed bearer” is a group of about 15 men, personally chosen by the prophet.
After filing for divorce, they discussed living expenses in which Lyle would pay $1,000 a month in child support. Reduces to $600 when the child turns 18. Lyle was responsible for paying for the child’s health and education. He also had to pay $2,000 for his wife.
Charlene Jeffs filed for divorce in separate proceedings in state court in Tooele. The divorce proceedings were finalized before January 2016.

She said the items were often reserved for the Bishop’s family, and other witnesses recalled seeing carts and pallets loaded with meat, fish and turkeys that were not available to other FLDS families. “And the waste that is happening with the bishop’s family is absolutely appalling,” said Charlene Jeffs. “And that’s sick. It should stop.” She spoke of the weekly ritual of cleaning out the family’s massive walk-in freezer: “And they took three five-gallon buckets of food to the animals that went bad.”
Bishop’s animals ate better than some FLDS families. In the end, her husband was arrested along with her brother Seth for a 12 million kuna fraud.
