Sheriff Reginald B. Scandrett is the twenty-ninth and first African-American sheriff of Henry County, Georgia. His reign began with difficulties and growing pains.
Reginald is a professional police officer who joined the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office in 1990 as an arrest officer before being promoted over a 30-year period to positions of greater responsibility. He was deputy chief of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office until his retirement in 2019.
Reginald was commander of the Prison Division for four years. He was the deputy chief of the Triple Crown Recognized Adult Remand Prison in Georgia and successfully ran it. He was tasked with overseeing the agency’s prison division, field division, court division, training division and reserve division at some point in his career.
Reginald is certified in a number of areas, including basic law enforcement, prison management and supervision, and specialized operational and tactical disciplines such as SWAT, SWAT Commando, SWAT Hostage Rescue, and Investigative Death in Custody, among others. He is a Georgia POST Qualified General Instructor, as well as an Instructor for Taser, PPCT Defensive Tactics, Collapsible Baton, and Impact Weapons.
In addition, Reginald is a founding member of the Metro Atlanta Head Jail Group. The Georgia Jail Association Outstanding Service Award was presented to him in 1994. He received Leadership DeKalb and Leadership Henry titles in 2014 and 2022, respectively. In 2016, he was selected by his colleagues to serve as vice president of the Georgia chapter of the National Organization of Black Police Officers. In 2019 he received the City of Atlanta’s Pro Phoenix Award.
In addition, Reginald has a degree (magna cum laude) in criminal justice from the University of St. Leo. He also holds degrees from the FBI Defensive Tactics Instructor School, US Department of Justice, and Mercer University Public Safety Leadership Institute.
In addition to volunteering for the Woodland High School Football Boosters and Choral Groups for four years, Scandrett coached in the Henry County Youth Association Football League for eight years. He is an active supporter of the Stockbridge Marching Tigers as Summit Chairman at the Scarborough Home Owners Association.

Sheriff Reginald B Scandrett is married to his childhood sweetheart, Deidree Bradley. They got married on June 8, 1991. So, as of 2022, they have been married for 31 years. The married couple met more than 40 years ago during school.
The music moved Reginald forward. When he started at Fredrick Douglass High School, his band was considered one of the best in the country. No eighth graders were invited to join the group until Reginald arrived. Although he played relatively light cymbals, he caught the eye of a young flutist named Deidree, who was destined to become his wife.
“Seeing him inspired me,” Deidree said of her first impression of her husband.
Exaggerations were used to start their relationship. Reginald claimed to be a year older than he actually was. However, on the band’s bus rides, they started talking. Deidree remembered one of those outings where she’d worn threadbare sweatpants, pink curlers in her hair, and Noxzem all over her face.
His interest in her was not diminished by the way she looked. Two years after the first meeting, only close friends remained. They had just gotten off the bus when Reginald said, “What are we doing?” while waiting for their vehicles.
When Reginald was elected Henry County Sheriff, after a full career in DeKalb County before retiring in June 2019, his wife helped run the entire campaign successfully.
“We ran like we were going for governor,” Reginald said. “My wife ran the entire campaign. He has a degree in mass communications from Clark. He has a gift for bringing people together for success. She is amazing. I can’t thank her enough.”
Deidree works as the Director of Human Relations for DeKalb County Public Works. Her Facebook page says that she is the DeKalb County government payroll supervisor. After graduating from high school, she and her husband attended Clark Atlanta University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in broadcast management.
“I followed her there and then I had to pay some bills,” the sheriff said.
In addition, the couple shared four children; Christian Scandrett, 30, has an MBA and is working toward an MBA in hospitality at Georgia State University. Regine Scandrett, 28, majored in psychology at Clayton State University. Johnathon, 25, graduated from Florida International University, where he played football, and received a double major in sports management and English. Deidrick Scandrett, 20, graduated from Stockbridge High School.
They are also grandparents to a granddaughter.
