Technology has certainly advanced since 1946, but damn if some of us still don’t covet comic detective Dick Tracy’s two-way wristwatch, a spy device introduced to the comics that year. Thankfully, nearly three-quarters of a century later, an officially licensed working version of the iconic spy device is finally here. Well almost here.

Created by Connecticut brothers Nick and Charlie Mathis, the Dick Tracy watch not only resembles the watch featured in the early comics (note: not the one with a built-in TV screen as shown in later stories), but it actually works. This is thanks to the integrated Bluetooth module, microphone and speaker, which allow you to make and receive calls from a paired smartphone.

“Since we were kids, we wanted a real Dick Tracy watch, but no one ever made one,” Nick Mathis, owner of Ivory and Horn, the company behind the project, told Digital Trends. “Even during the excitement of the smartwatch boom, every new wearable was exciting and surprising. [but] also a bit of disappointment. So, in 2015, I made my own Dick Tracy clock in my workshop, a cabinet in my apartment at the time, using a Fusion 360, a desktop CNC machine, and 3D printing via Shapeways. After posting photos online, emails kept flooding my inbox asking me to buy it. One person even offered $5,000 to make one for him!

Stories like this helped convince the Mathis brothers that their crazy dream wasn’t theirs alone. In 2016, they decided to purchase an official license to make two-way radio on the wrist a reality. Almost three years later, they finally got what they hoped for.

As a watch, it’s very attractive, with an old-style stainless steel case, sapphire crystal dial, mesh grill to cover the speaker components, and an oil-tanned leather strap. Of course, looks are only part of the package. While this device won’t do things like track your steps or let you send Animoji, it convincingly replicates the smart functionality of the device as shown on the site. In a nod to 2018, there’s also a button designed to activate your phone’s voice assistant.

As always, we offer our usual precautions regarding the risks inherent in crowdfunding campaigns. However, if you’d like to get involved, head over to the project’s Indiegogo page. With a down payment of $324 you should get one unit and delivery is scheduled for December. Better hurry though – only 1000 are being produced!
