As reported, in April 1994, Clayton broke into the main administration building at Duke University and planted a 2-inch pipe bomb inside a gasoline bottle, along with a threatening message.
The bomb was supposed to go off in the civil registry office, but it didn’t. Despite this, he also stole the university’s photo identification kit and blank student identification cards. His father tried to paint it as a childish prank and faced up to 30 years in prison and a $750,000 fine.
