How to empty and clean a Roomba vacuum

Your Roomba is the robot vacuum that will destroy all robot vacuums. It cleans for pennies and you can automate it to clean on a daily schedule, integrate with your Alexa ecosystem, and customize it in no time with the iRobot app. But let’s not forget that all those collected dust specks live inside your Roomba and take up a valuable trash can.

As part of standard Roomba maintenance, you should empty the dirt bin regularly to ensure optimum performance from your vacuum. Fortunately, the process is relatively simple and won’t vary much by model. For your consideration, here is a step-by-step guide to emptying your Roomba vacuum and some other tips to keep your bot in the best possible condition.

How to empty the trash on a Roomba e-series, ii-series, and j-series

While pricier Roomba vacs often come with a self-emptying dust bin and charging station, most of the company’s models use an internal dust bin built right into the vac. When the container is full, it must be emptied into the trash. Fortunately, it’s quite simple.

Step 1 – Press the canister release button on the back of your Roomba vacuum. This switch is marked with a trash can icon. Once you do this, the entire dirt container will slide out of the vacuum.

Step 2 – Make sure you have the right trash can by your side. Then, with the trash can in hand, press the trash can door release button (also marked with the trash can icon) to physically open the trash can door. Then go ahead and throw the dirt directly into the trash.

Pro Tip: Try to turn your face away while doing this, or you could end up with some debris in your eyes, nose, and mouth.

Step 3 – If you’re emptying the trash bin, it’s also a good idea to clean your Roomba’s filter.

With the dirt can still in hand, simply grasp the side of the filter and pull it out of the dirt can. Tap it against the edge of the trash can to shake up any deeply seated debris.

Do not try to wash the filter. It is not designed to absorb water.

Step 4 – To finish, rinse and hand wash your Roomba’s dirt bin to remove any remaining debris, allow it to dry, and then replace the filter.

Step 5: Re-lock the dirt bin on the Roomba. That’s all!

Cleaning the brushes and wheels of your Roomba

Roomba recommends cleaning the vacuum brushes once or twice a week. While you’re at it, it’s also a good idea to clean the wheels on the vacuum. We will teach you how.

Step 1: Turn your Roomba upside down and pull the two yellow levers on the brush guard to remove both brushes from the housing of your Roomba.

One of the brushes should have bristles. Others will have a series of small rubber panels.

Step 2: Remove the brushes, begin plucking excess hair from the bristles, rubber plates, and yellow plastic ends of the brushes.

You can even unscrew the plastic tips to catch hair caught around the attachment points of the brush.

Step 3 – To replace the main brushes, simply align the square end of the non-removable brush cap with the socket inside Roomba and snap it into place.

Step 4 – To clean the side sweep brush, use a Philips screwdriver to separate it from Roomba’s casing.

If you have trouble getting the bristles out of the brushes, you can cut them with scissors or a utility knife. After removing the hair, put the side brush back into place.

Step 5: Your Roomba’s wheels can also get covered in hair and dirt. Fortunately, cleaning them is not difficult.

With Roomba upside down, grab the front wheel and simply pull it out. Remove any strands of hair that are stuck inside the axle and wheel stem, then push them back into place.

Step 6 – Press down on the side wheels to sink them into Roomba’s frame. Doing this several times will help remove large clumps of hair and other debris.

Keeping your Roomba clean is essential to maintaining a tidy home and maintaining your robot vacuum. Fortunately, as you’ve seen, these amazing robotic vacuum cleaners don’t require a lot of maintenance, just a little love and care from time to time.
