It’s scary when a family member is diagnosed with cancer. However, this was not the case for the family of John Metchies III. This wide receiver for the Houston Texans was diagnosed with APL (acute promyelocytic leukemia) in July 2022, and luckily, it was the most curable form of leukemia.

John Metchie III comes from a family of six: his parents, John Metchie Jr and Joyce Metchie, himself, and his three siblings, to whom he attributes everything he is today.
With them, the soccer rookie immigrated to Canada at the age of 6. Together they fought for better economic and educational opportunities, and mainly thanks to the efforts of his mother, they got far.
So in light of that, John’s family will surely get over this hurdle like they always have. “Right now I am receiving excellent medical care, I am in a good mood and I hope to recover later,” the footballer assured his fans.
However, due to this diagnosis, John believed that he would probably not play football in the 2022 season. “My main focus will be on my health and recovery. Thank you in advance for your support and good wishes. I can’t wait to come back stronger than ever. God bless you,” he added.
On July 23, 2022, the Houston Texans even placed the star on the active/non-football illness list.
Prior to that, Metchie had 96 receptions for 1,142 yards and eight touchdowns in the 2021 season at Alabama. Unfortunately, he then tore his ACL in the SEC championship game in December and had to take time off.
Another reason why John’s family was confident in his recovery was that he had had a heart attack once before. When 14-year-old John joined Saint James’s School in Hagerstown, he suffered a severe blow to the chest which caused significant swelling and a rapid heartbeat.
Fortunately, the swelling went down. But later tests revealed that John had an enlarged heart as a result of the increased training, ending his dream of making it to the NFL.

John Metchie III didn’t talk much about his father, John Metchie Jr. But we do know that he is from Nigeria.
Also, it seems that John’s father moved to Taiwan for work and there he met Joyce, John’s mother. After three children, John’s parents moved to Ghana and in 2006 to Canada.

John Metchie III loves his mother Joyce Metchie. She signed him up for organized sports, including hockey, lacrosse, and soccer.
But sportsmanship wasn’t the only gift John received from his mother. According to the star, he met his mother’s relatives in Taiwan and “it was a surreal experience.” Experiencing Taiwanese culture made John feel “so good” and that’s what sets him apart from all of his Alabama teammates.
Unfortunately, John doesn’t remember much about life in Taiwan.
Fun fact: John’s mother accompanied him to college at Penn State in June 2018.
How many siblings does John Metchie III have?
John Metchie III has three brothers. While we don’t know all of his names, we do know one that is closest to him: his 4-year-old brother, Royce Metchie.
According to the star, Royce introduced him to soccer after he showed little interest in playing or watching the games his mother signed him up for.
His brother Royce is also a professional soccer player. Last time we checked, he signed with the CFL club, Calgary. He reportedly spent over 3 seasons with the Calgary Stampeders and was awarded the starting safety job in 2019 in his second season in the CFL.
Royce was also selected in the third round of the 2018 CFL draft and has gone on to become one of the best safeties in the league.
Speaking of his other siblings, John said: “The relationships I have with my siblings and all my close friends in Brampton and at home mean the world to me. They are the reason I am the way I am. They helped me with everything, and they are still there for me unconditionally. Those relationships definitely mean a lot to me.”
In addition to them, John also has a loving older cousin, Jessica Osima, a nurse by profession. She often came to John’s games.
