Marvin “Popcorn” Sutton was a skinny mountain man with a long beard and dirty mouth. He grew up in rural Cocke County, Tennessee, one of the four “Moonlight Capitals of the World.” Marvin learned the art of sleepwalking from his father.
Marvin was in contact with the law. He was first convicted of selling illegal alcoholic beverages in the early 1970s. After that, however, he mostly stayed out of trouble.
Popcorn Sutton modernized her work by appearing in documentaries and even wrote an autobiography, Me and My Likker. Unlike other sleepwalkers who became legal and made money, Marvin insisted on moonwalking the old-fashioned way.
In 2007, agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives arrested him with 850 gallons of moonshine. A year later he was convicted and had to appear in prison. But on March 16, 2009, Popcorn was found dead. Although his cause of death was never revealed, authorities suspected carbon monoxide poisoning.
