Hulu’s latest offering, Under the Banner of Heaven, airs on April 28, 2022. The show is an adaptation of Jon Krakauer’s 2003 true crime bestseller of the same name about the gruesome murders of Brenda Wright Lafferty ( Daisy Edgar-Jones) and her daughter, who shocked a sleepy Mormon town in the 1980s.
The show, like the book, is about Joseph Smith’s founding of the Church of Latter-Day Saints (LDS Church) in 1830, searching for the meaning of the double murder. It soon becomes clear that the rise of fundamentalism in Mormonism, which Krakauer called “the quintessential American religion,” is more dangerous than anyone could have imagined.
Under the Banner of Heaven was created by Dustin Lance Black (Milk), who was raised in the Mormon church. Over the course of seven episodes, he wanted to explore “how patriarchal the church was, and in many ways still is,” he told Vanity Fair ahead of the show’s premiere. “And how such an absolute patriarchal structure threatens the security of many women.”
